Got another Palco today. This one is very interesting. It seems to be an early (age?) open road style hat. Its almost a "long hair" felt, we'll call it medium. The raw edge brim has 2 rows of decorative stitching. The non-reeded light brown leather sweat has "Turf Club" embossed on one side and the retailer stamp "Gus S. May Los Angeles Biltmore" on the other side. Sweat also has an embossed top edge. The white satin liner has an oil-skin tip cover over the Gus S. May tip. The paper size tag is interesting in that the size is embossed into the paper. The felt is thick and pliable but soft. Any softer and it would be floppy.
The reorder tag reads PALCO HATS, Inc., SO. NORWALK, CONN. Duplicating Number 65423.
Measures:
brim = 2 7/8
ribbon = 3/8
sweat = 1 7/8
crown = 5 1/4
It was made for the Gus S May store. Quoting Marc Chevalier, "Mr. Gus S. May was not a hatmaker or brand -- he was a Los Angeles haberdasher with a store(predictably named "Gus S. May") located inside downtown L.A.'s luxurious Biltmore Hotel. The haberdashery was in business from the '20s through the '60s. "Gus S. May" was a competitor of "Oviatt's", which was just a block away. (Meanwhile, James Oviatt had a branch store inside Beverly Hill's luxurious Beverly-Wilshire Hotel. Copycat...)".
