I purchased a vintage set of S.S. Van Dine's Philo Vance detective series on Ebay. They are a fun read though I agree with poet Ogden Nash who wrote: "Philo Vance/Needs A Kick In the Pants."
They were all the rage in the 1930's, only to be totally forgotten when hardboiled took over the detective genre.
Anyone else read these books? I'm sure that many of you have seen the Vance movies with William Powell, or Basil Rathbone, or William Warren. The movies are equally as fun though Vance isn't such a pompus ass in them.
