Pre 1940s Stetson Westerns

As badly as I wanted the Stetson hat box to go with my Tom Mix, (which was REAL bad), I would have had to bid $1800 to get the box and hope it didn't get bid up any more, so I had to give up trying.

Stetson No. 1 Quality. Brim is 3 1/2 inches with curl, 4 inches originally. Has 7 inch open crown. Dates about late 1920's. It was owned by Warren W Joy who lived in Denver and was born ca. 1895 in Iowa. The hat was sold at the Selfridge Men's Wear store, in Denver, owned by Charles Francis Selfridge, born 1870 in Cedar Rapids Iowa.

Thanks, Ross! Offhand, I think my Tom Mix is the champion of these hats. But this one here is among top handful or so of early Stetson Westerns that I have, despite some mothing on it. If I rated them by Best Great Hat for the Price, this one wouldn't be considered a bargain hat by any means. Probably the best I have in that category would be my Boss Raw Edge Kettle Finish Real Nutria, which was only about half the price of this No. 1 Quality hat.

There's no regular Stetson mfg tag, but has a Stetson inventory tag. The liner of the hat has very faint writing, etc, but I can't make out details. Phillip Miller formed Stockman-Farmer Supply and later formed Miller-Stockman. He also founded Miller Fine Hats of Denver Colo.

A couple more photos of the hat. I did remove the liner, which wasn't sewn into the hat, and it does appear to have very faint writing, but I can't make it out and it doesn't seem to be a Stetson liner, best I can see. It seems small for the hat and was maybe added later, but I think it's quite old.

Beat up old 3x, gotta be 1920s or so. Moths really loved this old hat! Vvv sweat stitching, nice liner, #406 block with 7” crown, 5” BE brim.

Modest proportioned BRE clear noot western in a darker shade of felt than all the rest of my tan-ish westerns. Moths loved this one almost as much as the 3x above. Unfortunately the LOT is stamped off the edge of the sweat, and is completely illegible. But I awesome it’s near the late 20 early 30s mark.

Ran across this Stetson “Sombrero” out there. There was some talk earlier in this thread about Stetson sending them out for the embroidery work. The ad copy seems to imply that the hat box is not original to the hat (and I suspect the liner isn’t either). Still … I’d wear it!

That hat has been on Etsy for a couple of years for $4K or so.

Was listed with High Noon some yrs before that. The price goes up every time it gets sold & someone tries to flip it.

The BRE I’ve been hoping for finally turned up and I was lucky to snag it on eBay on a low BIN. Patience paid off.
There was some likely provenance that came with this hat that indicated this one is from 1916. All its dating clues line up, as well.

Forgot to add the labels and lot numbers.

3 1/8” brim in front and back, with curl.
5 1/2” crown.
Appears to be the 1097 “Denver” model according to the 1900 circa BRE catalog link that @VoodooSan was kind enough to share with me.
