Purple hat?
Hmm, that's because "black" dye is a blend of different colors- each respective color reacts at a different quality than the next. Blues dyes horribly- red dyes with very little effort.
If you want to "cancel" the purple, dye it with YELLOW- that should produce a form of brown. Complementary colors n all that....
