I was reminded this week-end of a series of incidents in which RAF Spitfires opposed B-17s of the USAAF in an air defence role. Anyone know the details?
I might have been able to help but all my books are in transit from Norway to Australia at the moment. But saying that this incident is a little later than my main interest.
Your best bet may be to ask over at the 12 O'Clock High forum, someone there should be able to help you.
I know the answer myself - I was trying to provide a little light-hearted entertainment by way of a quiz. The operations that led to these incidents began in 1945.
As I said this is a bit late for me but I'd imagine it's might have something to do with the inter-nation communication cockups that occured with some 2TAF and USAAF ops.
No cock-up or miscommunication here. In this case the RAF 'scrambling' Spitfires and intercepting USAAF flights was purposeful and pre-arranged as a part of a defence plan.
