I have one if your interested I can take more pics tomorrow.
That's a gold plated switch key,the string is from a caboose.They were woven by conductors to hang the phone from.The string was used to tie slow orders so the conductor could catch them as the train went by a station.That's back when there were still cabooses.

Nice "Vanguard",like the "box car" numerals,nice dial,not much wear on crown,maybe you know how it goes,had certain things sold them or traded then years later the itch hits again.If you can the serial # so I can date the movement....

I have a beautiful watch, but unfortunately it has a way of stopping at random times (never while you look at it). It's an Elgin from 1918 IIRC. Also, I think it has fourteen jewels and railroads required seventeen? I know I looked it up at some point but my numbers may be off a little.

Thanks,Railroad"approved" watches had to have 17 jewels or more, adjusted to 5 positions,lever set,arabic numbers,temperature,etc.Read about Webb C Ball...

The Vanguard was last used on the RR in the 80s.I have the railroad approved card somewhere I'll have to look for it.

Interesting,maybe your Waltham was passed down from father to son,I was not aware that the pocket watch was accepted in the 80s..In any event judging just by the dial type and Waltham putting 23 jewels on the dial its probably a later movement.Thanks Brian...

Your "Vanguard" was made around 1941-1945,thats judging by the dial,it may have 8 adjustments also...

A pocket watch is still accepted for RR use.A lot of the old timers still use them.The Hamilton 992B is very popular.
I was a breakman/conductor for eight years in the 80s.
