rare coin in Salvation Army kettle

Obviously the author is not a numismatist. The face value is still a cent. The copper scrap value is $2.50.
The 1908 Indian Head Cent was the last of the Indian Head cents as the Lincoln Cent came about in 1909. The amount minted in 1908 was extremely small so they are very rare. Thus the value in thousands of dollars.
Oh and the protective plastic is known as a slabbed coin. :D
