US porn film industry bedridden by AIDS moratorium

Los Angeles - The multi-million-dollar US pornographic film industry was reeling Friday from a two-month production shutdown after three X-rated actors tested positive for HIV.

The Adult Industry Medical Health Care Foundation (AIM), which monitors the health of adult film actors, announced the moratorium and testing on Thursday and said actor Darren James tested positive for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

Lara Roxx and Dynasty, two actresses who appeared in movies with James, have tested positive. The industry is now gearing up to examine more than 45 other actors.

The production halt follows months of warnings from medical organizations that opposed films in which actors do not use condoms. Only 17 percent of actors wear condoms, according to the AIM.

The AIM frequently tests adult film stars for HIV, and the last actor to test positive was Tony Montana in 1999.

While X-rated production giant Vivid and other producers cancelled filming, some in the industry worried about the moratorium's financial consequences.

"I'm against any stop in production," said Tyler Cash, a producer with Sinamotion Pictures. "It will put a lot of people out of business. You'll have people who will start losing their apartments. It's just not fair."

Ric Williams, general manager of production company Private USA, said: "At this time Private has decided to halt productions, as our chief concern is the health and safety of our talent," according to the website Adult Industry News.

"Our best wishes, hopes and prayers are with those who might be affected by the current climate," he added.


Several porn production companies are based north of Los Angeles in the San Fernando Valley.

Jack Kyser, chief economist of the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation, said the adult film industry plays an important role in the local economy.

Tim Connelly, editor of porn industry magazine AVN News, said actors will suffer more from the shutdown than production companies.

"There are companies who are canceling movies already in production," Connelly said. "The industry generates billions of dollars a year, but the consequences for manufacturers and producers will be minimal. It will affect the performers."

Jenna Jameson, dubbed by Rolling Stone magazine the most famous porn star in the country, said the shutdown makes sense.

"The fact is that the adult industry as a whole has been remarkably free of (sexually transmitted diseases) and HIV, considering that sex is what we do for a living. We must do even more to prevent it from taking root among performers," she said.

"I think that any performer coming into the United States from abroad, including American nationals who have worked outside the country, should have a 'quarantine' period in which they must wait at least 60 days before beginning work again in the adult industry," she added.

James contracted HIV a month ago in Brazil while having sex without a condom in a movie, industry sources reported. - AFP



Is anyone REALLY surprised by this? It is like sticking a fork in your eye and being shocked that it hurt.

That is not to say I don't feel for people who have made bad mistakes in their lives.

The comments about the producers not want production to stop because they are concerned about "people losing their apartments" and "praying" for the preformers is a load of crap. They use and exploit people for a buck. If they were concerned at all about these people they wouldn't let them make smut films.

Also them telling us that if they stop making porn that it will be BAD FOR THE COMMUNITY!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I think that a quarantine is great. Just that 60 days is too short. It should be 60 years. The porn films and the heavy emphasis in our culture today is NOT a good thing. The "anything goes" mentality. Hummm, maybe a link betweek kids who end up on milk cartons, kidnapped from their bedrooms by abductors, and the rampant molestors?

They quaranteen animals and certain fruits (no pun) and vegetables....applying it to people who bring a disease into the country....it is unenforcable. Who knows what YOU did on your last vacation overseas. Nice idea, but not workable. What, blood tests at every airport terminal? We can't even keep out terrorists!

I shed no tears for the porn industry and the "actors". If you play with fire, you will get burned.

I saw this on CNN this past weekend. The stupid thing about this is that they say this has happened before. It happened several years ago when a porn "actor" (and I use that term loosely) infected five actresses (again used loosely) in one movie. Those people then infected more people. You think they would have learned their lesson after the first incident that sex is to be between two people, in a monogamous relationship, not 20 people in someone's back yard in one weekend.

I have always thought biblical laws were not only the laws of God, but also a very good and healthy way to live. Multiple sexual partners not only creates conflict, but it ain't too healthy either. Stealing from someone creates very bad feelings, even if you don't accept it is God's law. All of those commandments come from intelligence, be it man's or God's. Tis' not for me to judge those who choose to make a living in the porn industry. The world works on supply and demand. Tell me, what is REALLY wrong here? The supply?

Or the fact that there is a demand for this kind of 'entertainment'?

The supply would not exist if it were not popular, if there were no demand.

I'll get mocked for saying this...

... I was never much of a stud. I was never out to bang as many broads as I could. I was always looking for the one woman that I could share my life with, with many disapointments along the way.

I believe that I have what many of these people secretly wish they had... someone to love and enjoy for decades to come. I know my self and my wife enough to know that neither one of us is going to bring home some nasty crotch-critter, and because of that trust we're better couples because of it.

I think we're all to blame for this crisis. If you've ever enjoyed this kind of "entertainment", you're somewhat to blame. If you've looked the other way and say "let them be", you're somewhat to blame.


I feel bad for these people. They thought they had it all and lived for the moment. It was all taken away from them by a big virus with a little name.

I beg to differ. Raised a Roman Catholic and happily married for almost 15 years, I don't see my culpability.

I have supported the abolishment of the criminal element that spawns abuse of wives, the elderly, and especially children.

Do I feel bad for these people? NO, but I feel bad for our society. We are a people of FREE CHOICE. Therefore, don't you reap what you sow? Yes life is unfair, and the innocents who die in car crashes when a DUI driver plows into them...is the lost child at fault?

Lets go back to a culture and society that holds the individual responsible....

No, I am not "Big Brother" and I do not judge what takes place in the privacy of your home. However, stop and think about your world...all around you. How unsafe women now feel going out at night, and how children no longer can be dropped off at the park unattended to play for hours. Can't do that today for fear that some pervert will molest or abduct them. So where is the problem? Not at MY doorstep, Mr. !!!!!!

We have a bleeding heart, liberal judicial system, a rampantly lienient penal and parole system, and advocates against the death penalty regardless of what the person did.

It's not a perfect world..Don't blame me and even remotely suggest "we are all to blame".

I pay my taxes, go to work every day, take care of my family, mow my lawn, and give to charity. I even go to church.

No I do not frequent X rated movies, attend bars, or smoke drugs.

Not quite what I was saying. They are providing a supply. I certainly wouldn't call them innocent, nor would I even hint at calling it a 'service'.

However, I don't believe the real problem lies in those providing a supply; that is what the Nation is built on: People providing a supply to meet demand, and making money off of it.

What I think is the problem is the fact that there is a demand for this kind of thing. That public morals have stooped so much that people seek out this kind of "entertainment", again using that word loosly. I don't understand why it is considered perfectly acceptable for a person to watch pornography (as in, I don't understand why the viewer can sit back and watch porn as if it were the Hockey Game). I believe that if these men upped their standards a little, they would have many lovely young women knocking at their door thus eliminating the need for porn.

To sum up, I don't like the fact that there is a supply, but I don't believe that to be the real problem. The fact that there is a DEMAND is the issue.

I am not surprised in the least to be perfectly honest. It's amazing this hasn't came out before now. The smut peddlers have to feel the ramifications of their actions now. I can't have any pitty upon people like that what-so-ever. They knew what they were getting into when they started in that industry.

Is this what they teach kids in Sunday School these days? No pity for people with less-desirable lifestyles than their own? Should we not feel pity for the homeless man who lives in the street because he is addicted to drugs and/or alcohol or perhaps mentally challanged or disturbed? HIV is a serious and potentially deadly disease. Just because these people are in the adult film industry doesn't mean that they deserve to die.

I don't condone the lifestyle of an adult film "actor", but I don't condemn it either. It's not my place to judge. Chamorro said it best, "Only God Almighty" has that right. My suggestion is to adopt a "Live and Let Live" attitude and perhaps care about ALL human beings regardless of their lifestyle choices.

I'm probably in the minority on this one, but that's alright.

I'm not a supporter of the porn industry, nor am I a condemner of it. I don't patronize it one way or the other. It exists, no matter what I think about it. However, I have to defer to whichever genius it was who first said: "You pays your money, you takes your chances." If someone wants to take their chances, fine by me. I just don't want to hear the whining when they lose, and that goes equally for porn stars who get HIV or smokers who get lung cancer.

I feel sorry for anyone suffering, regardless if it was their own choice that caused the suffering. At the same time, like Jess said, folks must stand up for what is right and noble. You have to remember, a sin is a sin, is a sin. Therefore, if you go out and regularly over eat(gluttonly) or drink too much, you are in the same boat, from God's point of view as these folks who make money off of porn. Your sins are not better than someone's elses. We tend to forget that. That is why it is said not to judge. Get the speck from you own eye first. In the end, we all have an eye full of specks, and from the ultimate point of view, we are all sinners. You can't escape that. Judging others seem to make our sins less important. Fedora

Hmmm, if someone lit a fire, walked into and stood in the fire knowing they'd be burned alive if they didn't get out, I wouldn't have much pity.

The people in the adult film industry are aware of the fire they may walk into and are making the choice to potentially contract HIV. No I don't have pity. But I guess we need people out there that do have pity. I'm just not one of those people I guess. (I hope my answer doesn't sound harsh-it's not meant to be; I just find it hard to find pity from my heart for these people.)
