I have a pair of rough out Iron Rangers and gave them a going over with walking boot treatment, can't remember which. They aren't exactly rough out now as they have a slight sheen but it avoids all the stains! On the other hand, the stains show they've been around the block a few times...

These are my roughout engineer boots. Red Wing's Hawthorne Muleskinner roughout. You simply can't wipe off or saddle soap the flesh side, like you can with the grain side. Things get into the flash side of the leather, as opposed to staying on the surface.
I really like the feel of the grain side of the leather on the inside of the boot. With my lifestyle, the roughout flesh side just gets all messed up. Same thing with suede and nubuck. Same reason why I can't have those lighter colors. If I could only keep the shoes clean, I would have bought Iron Rangers and moc-toes in Hawthorne Muleskinner.
