Royal Canadian Navy's Centennial

This year marks the 100th year of service of the Royal Canadian Navy - there are a number of events and activities throughout the summer. FL'ers on the Eastern seaboard of North America should check out the Halifax International Fleet Review with warships from 10 nations visiting, including HMS Ark Royal. It's happening this week; sorry for the late notice, I just found it out myself! Halifax is also home to HMCS SACKVILLE, last of the Flower Class Corvettes that were crucial to victory in the Battle Of The Atlantic.

There are airshows, dockside tours, travelling exhibits from the Canadian War Museum, and more. Something to consider on your summer vacation.

I was proud to serve Maritime Forces Pacific at HMC Dockyard Esquimalt for three years, and deploy in HMCS Toronto during her NATO mission on Ops Sextant and Sirius in 2007. Although an air force uniformed legal officer, I "think navy"!

Fellow Canadians, GREAT NEWS! Our armed forces, while still legally "one force", but having returned to distinctive uniforms in 1986, are returning to their pre-unification names of Royal Canadian Navy, Canadian Army and Royal Canadian Air Force!

The navy's officers got their executive curl back last year as part of the centennial celebrations. No word on if the air force is getting its distinctive ranks back (that would be the icing on the cake, as a service RCAF member myself - never thought I'd live to say that!).

To all non-Canadians who may be wondering why our army, navy and airforce were not, until recently, officially called the army, navy and airforce, you'll have to ask a Liberal former defence minister name of Paul Hellyer. I have another name for him, but that can't be printed here!
