After being available only as, essentially, bootlegs for a long time, Fox has finally officially released some of the classic cult favorite Michael Shayne detective movies of the '40s to real DVD. They've even digitally restored them, and they're a dramatic improvement over my bootleg DVD-Rs.

Michael Shayne was a popular private eye character created by Davis Dresser. In these films, his best movie incarnation, he was played by the always great Lloyd Nolan. For review of all the fine folks here at the Lounge, as a reference to some great clothes, hats, hairstyles, and the like, I have captured a boatload of screenshots from one of my favorite films of the Michael Shayne series, 1941's "Sleepers West," in its pristine new restored form.

"Sleepers West" is a minor noir/detective classic that features Nolan alongside Mary Beth Hughes and Lynn Bari. Those of you who know me know I have a tremendous, sizable crush on Mary Beth Hughes, the sadly forgotten but very talented actress who is a bit of a cult favorite among b-movie aficionados, thanks to her roles in two films featured on Mystery Science Theater 3000, "Last of the Wild Horses" and "I Accuse My Parents." Every so often, the lovely Miss Hughes would find herself in quality movies more fitting her talent, and this is one of those times. She plays Helen Carlson, a young woman being escorted by Mike Shayne to testify on behalf of a wrongfully accused man. Mary Beth was only 22 when she appeared in "Sleepers West," but was already a beauty, and already possessed the incredibly expressive face that would become her hallmark. Lynn Bari plays Kay Bentley, a newspaper reporter who has a history with Shayne and is looking to crack the case Helen is testifying in. Throw in a mixture of bad guys out to kill Helen before she can clear the man's name, and a sympathetic fellow train passenger played by Louis Jean Heydt who attempts to escape the killers with Helen, and you have a nifty little detective flick from the heart of the Golden Era.

Enough of my rambling - on with the screenshots!

Great photos. I want to see them moving though...especially Mary Beth Hughes....

:p

I'm joking, but still, the movie looks very interesting. I'll take your bootlegs if you don't want them. :D

Is it just me or does Mary Beth Hughes remind anyone else of our own Jitterbugdoll?
The Michael Shayne mystery "Dressed to Kill" (truly an over-used name for mysteries) was released on DVD a while ago. I always enjoy Nolan as Shayne.

Sincerely,
The Wolf

Some, great shots of those neat scenes. Thanks!
Is this part of a boxed set or just individual movies on DVD?

Sleeper's West is part of the new Fox Michael Shayne boxed set that just came out. It has the first four Mike Shayne/Lloyd Nolan movies. Well worth the $19.99 from Amazon!

Dressed to Kill, another Mike Shayne movie with Lloyd Nolan and Mary Beth Hughes, is available by itself from Alpha Video for, like, $5.

It's a nicely packaged little set isn't it.

Feel free to keep screenshotapaloozing, there are three more films to grab.

Call me Easily Hooked . . .

Seeing those images, Atomic, makes me want to get the DVD set. I'd never even heard of Lloyd Nolan or Mary Beth Hughes before this (I'll fight you over Mary Beth! She's a DOLL! ;) )

Thanks a million, pal!!

Wow. Excellent.

The first few are my favorite; that suit and hat are just awesome.

Lloyd Nolan looked awesome as Mike Shayne. Looked like a million bucks, but still had that air of "regular Joe" about him. He was a great actor, and perfectly suited the Mike Shayne role.

I noticed something really nifty the other night - was watching "Blue, White, and Perfect," another of the Nolan-as-Shayne movies, and he looked to be wearing the exact same hat as he did in "Sleepers West." Whether that was Nolan's own hat, or a costume piece - that's a great touch.

You're welcome!

Mary Beth Hughes really was an absolute doll. Her career never really took off much beyond b-movies, though she did appear in a number of good movies and a few great ones. Besides the Lloyd Nolan films, she appeared alongside Erich Von Stroheim and Dan Duryea in "The Great Flamarion," starred alongside John Barrymore in one of his last movies ("The Great Profile," where he plays himself for comedy), starred in a very good version of "Inner Sanctum" in 1948, was almost murdered by Hugh Beaumont in "The Lady Confesses," acted alongside George Montgomery and Glenn Miller in "Orchestra Wives," had a great humorous turn in "Charlie Chan in Rio," and was the female lead alongside Cesar Romero in two Cisco Kid movies.

As a bonus: :)

I got the boxed set recently and have watched 3 of the 4 movies so far. I like how the light hearted side comes thru and some of the quips by the charectors are priceless. When Nolan gets the funny lines, some how I think of the line delivery of Bugs Bunny in the classic 40's cartoons.

So far it has been really fun.
