Two silver inlaid presentation walking canes belonging to Masterson came up for auction a few yrs ago. The silent buyer is unknown but believed to be one of the Koch bros.

Hansford Duncan Norrell (1834-1914).

Having been a publisher of books Norrell moved to Richmond, VA in 1861 to help the war effort & help in the government of the CSA. Secretary of Treasury Christopher Memminger hired him as a clerk, then in 1862 appointed him as a courier. Records show he was entrusted with delivering 5 boxes of CSA treasury notes worth $3,000,000 to Jackson, MS & $2,000,000 to Charleston, SC. CSA Secretary of the Navy Stephen Mallory then ordered Norrell to sail to Paris with two boxes containing 1,000 Confederate bonds each to deliver to Hon. Colin J. McRae. Norrell was instructed to burn the bonds in the ships boiler rather then surrender them should it become necessary. He managed to escape a Union naval blockade while aboard ship. While in Europe he was assigned to work for the Confederate Navy. He returned to the US in May 1865, after the war posing as a British citizen under the alias of William Martin, which he continued to use for a time.
