[Hats Matter]

I picked up these shoes last Wednesday. Bontoni "Ronaldo" in chocolate and beige. Leather sole. I have finally put together an inventory of my shoes and learned I have 48 pair of shoes. If you ever want to view shoe appreciation you can go on the Bontoni Instragram page and view a couple of hundred pairs of beautiful shoes.

Those Bontoni's are a lovely shoe, Hats Matter and I'm impressed with the exquisite shoe trees. At the bottom of my wardrobe is a shoe rack, each pair of shoes fit into a skeletal shoe tree, it keeps the shoes in shape whilst saving a lot on space.

Do you have any problem with the laces? I find that those cord type of shoe lace never stays permanently tied, somehow they always seem to work loose. On the other hand, the flat, woven lace always remain tightly secure, that's why I replace any cord lace when the shoe is new.

I keep my shoes in their original boxes and all have shoe trees. Some of the less expensive shoes do not come with shoe trees so I purchase the trees at my local Nordstrom Rack. In regard to laces, I do not have trouble with the laces on the Bontoni shoes but I have had problems with laces on Paraboot and Heshung shoes on occasion. I replace them with laces I purchased from Kirby Allen at the Hanger Project.

A number of times, in various threads, favourable comments have been made about a pair of shoes that I have worn.

Other than mentioning that they are from the collection of Simon James Cathcart, and former Lounger, SimonC., I have said no more.
Simon and I had, what can be described as, a communication difficulty, it was probably as much to do with my misunderstanding of his concept, as it was Simon's. I'm still not quite sure of how Simon's sales work, and that's probably because I'm still living in the stone age.

Communication problems aside, I really must compliment Simon on the most comfortable and aesthetically exquisite pair of shoes. They are noticed everywhere that I wear them, they finish off any period ensemble and they really are beautiful. Care must be taken when cleaning, that's not meant to be a gripe, the cream colour is canvas, getting polish on it is akin to spilling red wine on a white shirt. It might sound fussy but as with any two tone shoes, I use masking tape. The result you can see above. You can see more of these shoes and others just by looking up www.kickstarter.com

Franco Gazzani from Bontoni was in town today and delivered to me the shoes shown below. Unfortunately the photo comes across as Black but in reality the shoes are a dark cap toe Blue Derby. Franco mentioned today that he is enlarging his factory in Italy so that they can produce shoes more rapidly than at present. Bontoni produces about 10 pair of shoes per day and demand is huge. For a custom pair of shoes it takes about 6 months to be contructed from scratch. I ordered 3 more pair of shoes and they should come in about the time of the holidays. If you want to look at their shoes they do have an Instragram page

Beautiful shoes, Hats Matter. Bontoni really makes some great looking footwear. One of our local men’s store sells them, so I have been tempted to order a pair. You just may have pushed me over the edge.

Apologies in advance as this post is not vintage related. Before investing in time and money for a pair of vintage boots I needed to discover whether I would enjoy them.

This past week I picked up a pair of Allen Edmonds Higgins Mill boots (black CXL with black alpine grain uppers). They fit out of the box. I wore them today for over 8 hours and they were comfy. I have to say I like them.

The above pics are not great. I took it while out this evening. Since I will be wearing these boots more often I will update with better pics.

My learning is that I have been too late to jump on the dress boot or casual boot train. Now to commence a search for vintage boots.

I thought I had posted these before, but I couldn't find them. So, Boyd's Threadneedle Street brogued cap toes.

The labeling is very faded, but I believe this is a correct identification. Boyd's was a menswear store/small chain in the St Louis area. And Threadneedle Street was their store brand. I've seen it stated that International Shoe was the actual manufacturer, and I think they owned the Florsheim brand back then as well.

I've read that this brand and this particular shade was the shoe to wear in St Louis from the 50s through to the 90s.

Very thick soles and a well constructed shoe with great leather and a full glove lining. Very comfortable.

A good friend of mine asked me if I wanted a couple of pairs of shoes that are languishing at the bottom of his wardrobe. He didn't want any payment for them, he's still more than grateful for the Aloha shirts that my missus made him, pro bono. Lucky for me we share the same shoe size.


When he said languishing I knew what he meant, I have ummed & ahhed over a pair of Monk shoes, do I like the buckle or don't I? I cannot make my mind up, so I haven't bought them yet, they are just too expensive to languish at the bottom of my wardrobe.
