When I was younger, I used to wear a tie all the time as part of my school uniform. I stopped wearing ties once I left school. But then after I joined the Fedora Lounge and saw all those photos...well I started thinking of changing my image and my viewpoints on certain articles of clothing. It occurred to me that there really is nothing formal about wearing a tie and that I should be able to do it whenever I wanted to.

Then last year, my brother moved to London for work and left behind a sizeable tie-collection. Since he wasn't going to come back for it, I helped myself to his ties, but it's only been fairely recently (within the last 3 months or so) that I started the habit of wearing a tie regularly again (at the moment, about once or twice a week).

The majority of the following ties were my brother's, but some are ones that I owned previously or which I bought by myself. I apologise in advance for the colour...

Top: Patterned sky blue - Patterned cobalt blue - Striped Yellow - Grey w/white & blue stripes.

Bottom: Jet black (w/red & grey dragon on it. Not visible) - Two-tone silver/grey - Bright Red - Grey w/white & red stripes.

Top: Blue w/red, yellow & blue stripes (05) in corner. Highschool alumni tie (2005; my graduation year) - Red w/crests. My leaving-year highschool tie - Red w/gold patterning. My school's 150th anniversary commemoration tie. Limited edition.

Bottom: Grey tie w/white & blue squares - Red tie w/yellow & blue stripes. Regular school tie (yes, I have a lot of school ties...) - Light, silver-grey tie.

The cobalt blue tie (first picture, second from left, top row) is the first tie I purchased by myself...Today actually. I bought it because the colour matches my blue waistcoat.

All the other ties, with the exception of the school ties, are all my brother's.

I agree, nothing formal about wearing a tie. Thanks for sharing your tie story. I had stopped wearing them as often to work since no else does unless they're asking for money but in the past couple of years I've started wearing them almost daily again. And The Fedora Lounge marches on lol

^^Congratulations on the cache' of neckties, Shangas; I particularly like the school commemoration and the two-tone silver-gray (grey for you of the British Commonwealth) ones. On my job, I had always worn neckties on and off, but when I started actually collecting neck apparel, it gave me more impetus. Now if I go for more than a day without one, students and staff notice...

Bought this recently. The seller said it was from the '70s, but I suspected '50s.


Looks like I was right. The shape, construction, lining, and fabric (a old-fashioned rayon satin) point to early to mid-1950s.


See what it says on the back of the tie's large blade? Sort of misspelled ("Communism" should have been printed with an uppercase 'C'), but you get the point.


This is bare-knuckled, finger-on-the-button Cold War stuff -- no *****footing here, folks. I've never come across anything like it from that era.

Some '30s to '50s ties found at thrifts, estates and eBay/Etsy over the past two years. More to come.


The fourth tie below has tobacco pipes.

The third and fourth ties below have a bird's-eye view of skyscrapers ... a very unusual design motif for ties back then.

For the moment, this is my favorite handpainted / airbrushed tie. It's signed "D'Arsac" on the back of the blade. D'Arsac was a haberdashery on Fifth Ave., NYC., that specialized in neckwear and scarves.
