There may be something to this - something very similar happened when "The Exorcist" came out- prior to the release of that film, there were almost no claims of demonic possession for more than 100+ years, and the Roman Catholic Church was extremely skeptical that it was an even remote possibility. After the film came out, there was a rash of claims of demonic possession and the church went from a reasonable, pragmatic approach to the question to one of almost hysterical over-reaction to it.
