In the first photo, are the crowns of varying height, or is it just that some of them are just a more pointed montana peak? Terrific pictures, Pat, great to see you in the Lounge.

I don't think the crowns really are of varying heights, but in photos from that era they often appear to be. The bash seemed to be much less uniform at the time, so some take on the appearance of later hats, say from the 30s on, and some are much more sharply peaked.

Being a field item, it appears there was some leeway in how the soldier bashed the hat, as long as it was more or less uniform.
