We'll Meet Again (Don't know where, don't know when...) - played at Dad's funeral and then my brother's funeral three years later which was an odd choice for Mom to make since Dad & Scott never got along, but it's been subsequently latched onto for other relatives & family friends' funerals, so in my mind, it's now indelibly linked to death and thinking about who's no longer here.

Amazing Grace - sort of Mom's theme song & nickname so another that puts a lump in my throat since her death.

And interesting bit of trivia - the melody was stolen the Cherokee Morning Song, but the words & melody of Amazing Grace and Gilligan's Island can be used interchangeably. For Mom's memorial, the choir wanted to sing the lyrics to Gilligan because she'd appreciate the humor and it was one way, they felt, they could use the song without my losing it.

Richard Strauss' Zueignung ("Dedication" in German) sung by Jessye Norman:

Franz Schubert's Doppelganger sung by Alexander Kipnis (my favourite opera singer):

Read the poetry of Doppelganger:

The quiet night broods over roof-tree and steeple;
Within this house dwelt my treasure rare.
'Tis long since I left the town and its people,
But the house stands still on the self-same square.

Here stands, too, a man; toward heaven he gazes,
And he wrings his hands with a wild despair.
I shudder with awe when his face he raises,
For the moonlight shows mine own self there.

Oh, pale sad creature! my ghost, my double,
Why dost thou ape my passion and tears,
That haunted me here with such cruel trouble,
So many a night in the olden years.

Perhaps Schubert's best, if not most powerful, lied.

I don't think any songs make me cry. There are certain songs that take me back to certain times and I get all nostalgic/melancholy, but I never cry. It's a little sad, but also sort of a good feeling -- hard to explain.

"Frisco Town" by Memphis Minnie. Just the line where she says

"I woke up this morning about half past five,
I woke up this morning at half past five
my baby turned over cried just like a child
I'm on my way
to that Frisco town."

I don't know why, but it really touches me. It's the way she sings it.

Ooh...lots...

Fields of Gold by Eva Cassidy. They used at my partners mums funeral a few weeks ago and everyone broke down. Her song 'I know you by heart' can make me sob too.

'You made me love you' by Harry James-it's the opening bars...ah unrequited love stinks does it not?

'Happy Ending ' by mika. See above.

'Somewhere in France with you'

And Danny Boy (Londonderry Air) I had to sing this at a funeral. Not sure how I managed.

And too many others I'm too ashamed to print!
