It seems the filmmakers used quite a bit of artistic license.

Not really...she's always been pretty vocal about the fact her dislike of the play and film portraying Georg as cold and distant. She says he was warm & friendly & happy, but everyone else seems to have said over the years that he was fairly portrayed, others have said he was dark & brooding Maria his second wife (the familiar Julie Andrews character) pretty much singlehandedly saved the family and brought out their talent and brought about their fame & fortune.

Could be. But I was thinking more about the time the story was set in. I had the impression they were married in the 30s, not 1927.
