Squeaky shoes?

I just bought a pair of Stacy Adams "Madison" short boots that seem to be pretty comfortable. While they are not even close to being the shoe my Aldens are, they also cost a 1/3 of what I paid for my 405s. I haven't worn them all that much, but I came to a conclusion within two minutes of putting them on: these are the SQUEAKIEST shoes I have ever owned in my LIFE! Is there anything that can be done about this? I am considering giving them a coat of Pecard's to see if that helps. Any suggestions? The squeak won't keep me from wearing them, but it will sure garner me some funny looks from my co-workers!

I remember reading on The Chap's old website that squeeking is a way to enjoy properly made boots or something of the sort.

I actually had a pair of Madison boots as well. Damnably comfortable, but they did tend to squeek. I think it has something to do with how the leather above the ankle rubs against itself, as their Madison oxfords do not squeek at all.

Can't really give you any advice. I didn't mind it at all.

I had my pair of Madison boots re-soled and re-heeled, and they still squeeked.

I really think it's the way the leather in the uppers rubs against itself or something.

If the sound is a true squeak it may help to have a repair shop put clinch type sole nails on either side of the shank. This is the most common cause of squeak. If the sound is more like an air compressor blowing off in very short bursts it may be from a foam insole or sock liner improperly glued in place that is acting like a bellows.

Well, as I alluded to before, I gave them a good coat of Pecards. After rubbing it in over the course of a few days and wiping off the excess, the squeaking has been remarkably reduced! Of course, now they won't SHINE worth a hoot, but that will improve as the surface Pecards either soaks in or is worn off. I am wearing my Madisons for the first time today (for a full day) and thus far they are amazingly comfortable. This pair is black, but I can see a brown pair in my future!
