Late 1940's Stetson 7X Clear Beaver. Has 2 7/8 inch Cavanagh type felted edge and 5 1/2 inch open crown. The felt is softer than any of my other 7X hats and It has a wonderful feel.

Man...I may have to leave the Lounge. I just can't compete with the likes of your 7XCB.
You sir have been competing just fine. Your Derby's are great. I am not really much competition if we are going for that. But some of those OTHER guys....(Like Vic and Allan......ok..... especially Vic and Allan) make my "collection" seem hardly worth looking at. ;)

I am not in completion with anyone…I have been collecting for many decades. Great colections take time to build up, unless you have deep pockets and can afford to throw huge sums of money at to acquire
Tortoise and the Hare….
Seems like we see a lot of Tortoise’s around here.
They are fun to watch, for a while,
but the Hare’s keep us coming back.

Vic,
No one, including me, said anything about you (or even me) competing. I just complimented you (and Allan and many on the lounge) on how yours and their (HARD EARNED) collections make mine, and I will say it again, "Hardly worth looking at". NOTHING about you (or them) competing. Wanted to make my part of the conversation plainly clear. I am really in awe of what you have (especially in the larger harder to find sizes) and very much appreciate all your contributions. You have a lot of really nice hat history!
Best,
M
PS: Even with "deep pockets" larger sized hats like you and I wear are like the proverbial "needles in the haystack" that have to be found first, regardless of the money involved.

I never thought that you meant anything by your comments. I was just trying to point out that my collection did not happen overnight. I sent over 50 years collecting, learning and looking every single day of the year running my searches on eBay. Not only for hats, but other collectibles as well. Study ing photos, prices and looking for information to educate myself and others as well. I have been on the Lounge for over twenty years now, I have seen a lot of people come and go. I enjoyed talking hats with a number of like minded people. I feel like the education has been a two way street. I have shared every bit of material that I felt people could learn from. I know I have spent more money on education materials than most people have spent on their collections. There are a good of amount members that I loved talking hats with learning from each other. There was a small amount of us very serious and then there where some that I thought were hacks and did nothing for the cause of teaching, learning or discovery of new info. I did not care to talk hats with these types of collectors. It was like their thoughts did not use any kind of logic. At all...nothing wrong with having differing opinions. I still learn something new everyday. It’s the people who see 2 + 2 and think that 22 might just be a possible answer…these types are the ones that I think do a disservice. To the lounge with there remarks. I know I have made statements on the lounge that I now know to be incorrect But were thought possible at the time that they were made.
As for my biggest competitors, Jimmy the Lid and RLK and a few others, but not Alan F. He would be way to small of a hat for me. That is why I would send stears on hats coming up for sale on eBay and also any hat photo that went against common held beliefs of the time. A PM under the topic of “worth a look” would start a conversation or purchase for Him. Now Jimmy the Lid was a horse of a different color. I created an Insurance policy for him that would save him a large amount of money to keep me from bidding…it made a lot of good economic since to me….I have lost track of Jimmy, if anyone can put me back in touch with him I would sure appreciate it. He has not responded to my emails in years. I have gotten long winded and my vision is all gone for this day…A little knowledge has cost me far too much money…educate and learn everything that you can

YES, I LOVE the History too..........I too have spent a bunch on ephemera (in this case, specifically hat ephemera) going back almost 200 years (my other collections go back much further). And as you say, it was not on the cheep. Lately I have been getting some awesome 19th century hat catalogs....I just need a better way to scan them to share, than I am doing now. Many have a LOT of pages, what I show just is the tip of the iceberg as they say (both to the pages and the number of catalogs I have yet to even show.

And also YES, I have made mistakes in my thinking too....but all part of the learning process(hope fully we never stop learning).

THANK YOU Vic!

BEST,
M

PS: As an aside I have been at it for over 50 years too (collecting history, caught the bug from my parents and history teachers). For hats/hat ephemera specifically, over 30 with my greatest interest over the last 20.
