Anybody read his books? They're the best books to read about WW2. Mostly about the Eastern front, with some notable exceptions, like Monte Cassino.
Sven Hassel is a Dane, who was drafted into the German Army and fought in a tank unit on all European theatres. He is still alive, and has a website
http://www.svenhassel.net/, where you can see pictures of his comrades on whom his characters are based. Impressive to see the pictures, once you've read the books. Here is one example:
Porta and Sven behind a LMG on the Red Square, Charkov, 1943.
His books are best sellers, written mostly in the 60's but still in print, due to their huge popularity. Mandatory reading for anyone interested in WW2.
