Just a quick note to say how much I enjoy your show!
Keep up the amazing work.

Thanks very much for that.

Today marks the anniversary of Count Basie's Birthday. That means a tribute show!

This year's tribute features selections from "The Complete Decca Recordings", "America's #1 Band" and others. There is also a radio transcription of the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival which has some amazing solo work by Lester Young, Illinois Jacquet and Roy Eldridge.

Today's podcast commemorates "Black Tuesday" - the final culminating day that marked the Stock Market Crash of 1929, and of the Great Depression that followed.

Enjoy!

This week's show was a real cooker. Thinkin' on pickin' a new opening theme song for each show. Suggestions are most welcome.

So far, I am considering:

Duke Ellington - The Minor Goes-A-Muggin'
Duke Ellington - Johnny Come Lately
Count Basie - Do Nothing 'Till You Hear From Me
Count Basie - Swingin At The Daisy Chain

Really, really good suggestions will win a prize. Meaning, a compilation cd.

Thanks very much.

This year I'm amping things up a bit.

Black history month will have an interview with Big Jay McNeely which I did a couple of years back, but for technical reasons couldn't air.

Also on Black History Month, Yvonne Lanauze, who sang with Duke Ellington (now goes by the name Eve Smith) will join me in the studio.

Eve Smith

Looking forward to more guest interviews, live studio broadcasts of hot jazz and swing musicians from Vancouver B.C., local entertainment personalities and more of the 78 rpm era.

The latest podcast is up. I opened with what I think is my favorite recording of "One O'Clock Jump" - recorded in 1944 with Artie Shaw and Illinois Jacquet.

Doesn't get better than that.

This week's podcast is a continuation of Black History Month, and my guest is Eve Smith, who, as Yvonne Lanauze (or just Yvonne) sang with the Duke Ellington Orchestra from 1951 to 1952 and recorded several memorable sides with Ellington before embarking on a long successful career as a vocalist in Montreal and Vancouver.
