Hello everyone,

On this forum, the topics are more oriented towards recommandations, clothes worth buying or trying etc.

What are the errors you wish you did not make and things you would do differently regarding outerwear ?

Cheers

Focusing solely to on chest measurements and not shoulder size and arm opening. Not really understanding the effect of a front drop on jacket appearance. Buying the size that fits well while standing still with arms down versus size that really allows comfortable movement all day. Buying styles that I’m not really comfortable/confident in.

Not just adding an inch to waist measurements. I should also just have stuck to boxier styles, as I am an oblong shape and some things just aren’t going to fit unless I oversize in certain measurements or unless I commit to swimming every day. Also buying too many leather jackets for a reasonable rotation. I have 12 at the moment and I should really have 5.

I'm of the opinion that correct choices cannot be attained without the mistakes that lead to them.

Personally I wish I had discovered this place sooner, as I bought two leather jackets of suspect quality with which I had never been truly satisfied simply for being unaware of where to find better options for similar prices. Still, this is not really a mistake but rather a "wish I had known".

Posting more than 13 times on this forum. :)

In all actuality, I've asked questions nearly identical to this on here, and I have to agree with @Zoro above - all these mistakes ultimately led me to where I am today. No-where perfect but understanding much more than I did before. Life without mistakes is just too-boring. And we never learn anything valuable without making some really good mistakes.

Maybe this thread would be of interest as well - since it basically covers this topic as well https://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/jacket-collecting-ever-ask-why.116316/

As Mrs Marlowe is often wont to say, "Just because you can get it on and do it up doesn't mean it fits."

Buying too many of a thing in a moment, bought too many because "they were in an odd sale" or "a rare used/2nd hand pair appeared"

I learned to start slow, see what I like and what I'd be using, figure out sizing and if the style suits you

Burned a few of everything that way, I believe that it is worth going for the real thing, but start with something cheap and on a low budget; One might not even liking that style after getting it or the sizing needs quite a bit of tuning

Interesting, what do you mean by believing in shoulder measurments ?

That it makes the jacket either too small or too big. It just makes the jacket look different. If the chest works, the shoulders will work. Whether you'll like the way it looks, that's another story altogether but it won't constrict you in any case. Vox populi will, of course, not agree but vox populi has difficulty grasping the notion that if you cut the red and white stripe off of selvedge jeans, they become regular jeans.

I actually agree with you on this one, I also noticed that chest measurement is the way, but I have a pretty standard morphology though

I never bought a custom jacket, but what is the problem with them ?

Going "custom" is as needless as it is expensive. There is only either MTM or OTR but adding or taking an inch or two on sleeve and back length would be meaningless even if it didn't constitute an often considerable upcharge in price and because it always does, I think of it as a borderline fraud.
OTR is perfectly fine for 95.98% of the population. None of us have particularly long arms or torsos.

Damn, I guess I'm one of the 4.02%.

I used to have OTR leather jackets (a long time ago), but to be honest, they never fit me very well. Interestingly, fabric jackets look better, although I sometimes wish they were 1 cm longer in the body and sleeves. But they're just about okay.
