Guess who just got lucky!
I am sitting here at work when a co-worker calls my attention to the cafeteria. Someone put out a box of dvds and cds to dispose of. As we rummage through the box I see an unopened copy of The Four Feathers!
This is the story of an avowed coward's resignation from his army unit on the eve of war and his road to redemption.
Another great film to cross of the list. :)

Congratulations! I just put the '39 version on my Netflix cue so I can check out the transfer and what (if any) restoration work was done.

I remember seeing the most recent version in the theatre and was very disappointed with it. It had none of the sweep and grandeur of the original. It was yet another example of the remake turning a cracking tale of adventure into just another introspective muddled mess like most of the rest of today's films.

Cheers!

This is one of the greatest films ever made, pure artistry on every level. In a recent event at Cinemateque here in Toronto Robert Towne suggested that the dinner scene - the one near the end, where one character is blind - was the single best peice of screenwriting he could think of.

How is the quality of the dvd?

I have not had a chance to watch it yet. This edition looks like a "bare bones" issue. There are no extras and box states the picture is full-screen. It was free so you won't hear me complaining. Well maybe a little.. ;)

Aspect ratio is irrelevant. Anamorphic widescreen didn't hit theaters until about 1955, so anything released in 1939 would be "full screen" by default.

The big issue that I'm interested in is if the print used for the transfer was any good, or if they did any restoration work on the picture and sound.

Still, whatever it is, the price was right!

Cheers!

Ah I see. Thank you for that information! I will try to post a few screen caps. Maybe you can determine the picture quality.

I am not sure if any restoration work was done on the film but it is a great one! ;)
