THE MALLORY MILE

Thanks, Joe! I kind of have a recollection of you having a similar color hat—am I making that up?
I do have A few that dip into the lavender tones…. Some more so than others. one is practically purple. Which shots are closer to the actual color. The under brim shots?

Posting to document this rare and super interesting hat—a Mallory Commander. I think I’ve only seen one other on the lounge.

Definitely 1940s in proportions and the original box had a layer of newspaper from 1948 inserted as a kind of dust shield. Unfortunately it didn’t keep the moths out and, even worse, the sweatband has dry rot and is crumbling.

Still, it is a thing of beauty. The felt is a lavender gray and very, very thin and soft. The only comparable felts I’ve come across have been in 1940s-50s high end Borsalinos. Felt so thin that I can shape the crown by hand effortlessly but putting the hat on my long-oval head torqued the brim into ridiculous shapes. I added some stiffener to the brim and ironed it to get a bit better. It still has a very 1940s swoop caused by a tight brim binding—I had to push a divot into the ride side to keep it from dropping low over my eyes for the photos. I’m going to see if I can get some wear out of it before the sweatband falls out but it would benefit from a reflanging as well as a new sweat so that all might have to happen sooner than later. Sweet Mother of Bobo the Clown!!!! That is breathtaking, David. Whatever work you choose to put into it, I am sure it will reward you handsomely. That beauty needs to be worn, and often!!!!

It looks more gray than the under the brim shots—more like the ones where I’m wearing it.

Thanks, Mark! Agreed—it’s a little rough but the color and shape are great so worth renovating for daily use.

Mallory Greyhound. Late 1930s / early 1940s?

Pre-1948 Mallory Fifteen or XV Homburg. Has 2 1/2 inch brim and 5 1/2 inch open crown. Has contrasting color brim binding. The OPA tag dates the hat between 1942 to 1947 but I suspect it's towards the end of that period.

Got this beautiful pre Stetson 1923 Mallory Fifteen from The Bay. Unfortunately it’s been destroyed by moths (damaged wasn’t described and could not be seen in photos). Luckily the seller was nice enough to refund my money. This is probably the nicest hat I’ve ever felt and definitely the oldest. I would hate for it to go to wast. Is there anything that could be done to fix it? Hate to just toss it.

Heres the sellers photos:

Since you got refunded, you're ahead of the game. If you like the hat, wear it and enjoy it. While it has a little moth damage, it's nowhere near destroyed.

Thanks. You’re right, it’s still a beautiful hat. I’ll just freeze it for a while, in the cold garage, make sure all those little clothes eaters are dead. And probably just use it as a nice beater.
