Interesting design (and thanks for posting the photo; where'd you find it?), but I can think of a couple of potential problems. First is that a significant portion of the population has always been boorish (at least on occasion, if not habitually) and is prone to doing things like depositing their well-chewed gum on the undersides of their theater seats. Second (as CRH already noted) is that the potential for leaving one's hat behind is greater if it's left tucked out of sight for a couple of hours. (I have indeed left my hat on a restaurant seat, which was pushed under the tabletop. And I'm not one likely to forget his hat. So I can well imagine it happening with some frequency.)

The design I prefer, which I've seen on the backs of many an old church pew and stools at restaurants that have somehow survived more or less as they were 60 or 70 or more years ago, is a simple spring-loaded clip. It grips the hat by the brim securely enough to hold it but not so tightly as to leave an indentation.

Hmmm..... I know of one of those for sale, its painted a horrid green, pretty beat up. Been considering it for awhile. Such a neat invention, simple but useful.

Funny this topic should come up again today, as I was at the Troy Music Hall in Troy NY just yesterday for an afternoon concert. Each seat in the Hall still has this exact wire holder underneath it. I was ready for them this time! It was amazing to see how perfectly the brim slid right into the slot of the holder.

Too bad these have disappeared. What a great convenience! Everywhere else I go to see a play or hear a concert, I have to hold my hat in my lap through the performance
