Those two both look like superior early 1930s stingys . . . a real find.

I don't know about that- look at the ribbon, how it's an all one piece bow, that the front edge of the bow is formed by the ribbon, instead of it being a separate bow. . I haven't seen that on hats older than the late '50s. Brim also looks to be a bit short for an earlier one. But without seeing the liner and sweatband, I could be wrong.

Both look good. I like the look of bound brim stingies.

I'm with Dinerman - 50s. When they
would have called a Lord Tarleton and a
Stephen Stetson miscegination.

Bet they're both good quality hats. Look
like stingies as I like them- with tall crowns.

And you got them for a song and the cost of shipping, if I recall correctly! :eusa_clap :eusa_clap

I was considering bidding on them, but I have enough stingy brims that are too small for now! :eusa_doh: Besides, I overslept this morning.

Cheers,
Tom

I've seen a Stephen Stetson hat liner. It has a lengthy disclaimer that was required because John B. Stetson sued over the use of the Stetson name. Any body got a picture of said liner?

Dinerman, could you tell us more about bow history? Do you mean that these bows were formed from one uncut piece of ribbon, as opposed to one piece to go around the hat, another to form the bow, and a third to crimp it? I'm very interested in the history of bow development, and would welcome a tutorial.

A regular hat ribbon, like the one on the right with a double bow, there's the ribbon which goes around the hat, the bow, the second tail, and the middle tie thing. A lot of hats only have a single bow, I guess it was just a stylistic thing.

What the lighter colored one, the one on the left, appears to have, and I've had a couple which have had this feature, is, the ribbon which goes around the hat forms the first bow, then there's a second bow behind, and finally, the center tie.

I have a champ which just has the ribbon and center tie, with no bow at all.

If I have some time, maybe I can pull together some shots of bow evolution and styles.
