Trying to find a similar hat for a friend. Anyone have any ideas?

Never seen such a thing before, but I'd say that's a cap, not a hat.

Looks like a cross between a hunter cap, welder's cap, and construction helmet liner. It also looks more than a bit like an Ecuadorian hat I have.

Welcome to the Lounge! Appears to be a "Jones Style" Hunting Hat/Cap in an unusually high fashion pattern. More traditional patterns are sold by Outdoors & Hunting Equipment shops. Cabelas, L.L.Bean etc.

I think this is a fishing or hunting cap, must be chinese, in any flea market" you can find many like this, but I believe You could give a better cap.

Let's, please, stop calling "caps" "hats."
There is a big difference.

More of a hat than a cap, really. Picture is a bit fuzzy, sorry.

Doesn't look like a Jones-style cap, that appears to be similar to a baseball cap with sides.

Actually, a hat is defined as a "shaped covering for the head, usually with a crown and brim," and a cap is "a close-fitting covering for the head, usually of soft supple material and having no visor or brim."

This seems to be more of a fedora-type hat with the sides pushed way up.

And he really likes this style of hat, would like to find one very similar for him. He's odd, what can I say?

Brim, an optional projection of stiff material from the bottom of the hat's crown horizontally all around the circumference of the hat
Puggaree (British) or sweatband or hatband (American), a ribbon or band that runs around the bottom of the torso of the hat. The sweatband may be adjustable with a cord or rope at the top and is on the inside of the hat touching the skin while the hatband and puggaree are around the outside.[8][9]

And cap:

A cap is a form of headgear. Caps have crowns that fit very close to the head and have no brim or only a visor. They are typically designed for warmth and, when including a visor, blocking sunlight from the eyes. They come in many shapes and sizes

But, yes, the picture you show is a bit of a strange case - I'd call it a cap, as it is so close-fitting, but some others might choose otherwise.

But everything from Ebay to the GoodWill on line shop to just the Net in general seems incapable of telling the difference.

True, but ebayers are looking for the most number of potential bidders, and if your title contains as many relevant (not necessarily accurate) search terms as possible, so much the better.

It appears to have a brim that goes all the way around. Its just pinned up at the sides.

It also appears to me that the material is so soft/floppy that the front would not "stay up" if the sides were not pinned up. And the crown seems to be form-fitting, as in a tugue or a cap.

All in all, a very strange thingy.

I would not be surprised to learn that it was made by some local craftsman and isn't sold very commonly. Might even be unique.
