I think the original brown colour looked good, shame it's been turned black

Actually, the jacket is currently in brown color, though in very very dark / deep brown. Which is the opposite of the leather of inside the pocket, that is much lighter brown.

So, is this leaning towards my earlier assumption that the jacket has been redyed?

Ah ok so the interior brown is more a chestnut brown, as for your assumption of redying that they tried and sat on the surface instead of soaking in, with any finish it would eventually flake and peel like it has

Whoever has done what to it, I'm a old believer in the adage, if in doubt leave it out, especially in expensive jackets, if you need a different colour pass it on don't mess with it

No. A dye is either pigment (a layer that stays on top) or aniline (penetrates the fibers). Neither is sticky.

Aniline dyes don't flake and I'm not seeing flaking pigment topcoat.

The jacket has darkened because it has been over saturated with some waxy leather conditioner. Over conditioning can (sometimes permanently) weaken the fiber structure, hence the flaky surface.

fwiw my guess is that its been polished with a darker tan shoe polish, perhaps to cover surface scuffs? If you're not happy then it's clearly not as described so you should be able to return it for a refund.
I bought a G1 in the same state on eBay uk about ten years ago but as it was cheap - ie the seller had no idea of its real value I cleaned off the polish with saddle soap and treated it with Pecards once it was dry. Fortunately the polish that had been used on mine was the same colour as the leather so the finish was the original colour. Yours would probably be streaky if you did the same ie don't!

the color loss is just something aero's cxl jackets do, without being worn even if you can believe it. never understood how that's possible and still don't, but i've owned several and they all do it

I'm certainly no expert, but when I saw the inside of the pockets, my immediate assumption was that the jacket had been dyed.
As Marc already wrote, I would first treat the entire jacket thoroughly with saddle soap. But I don't think you'll be able to restore it to its original condition. Maybe with an acetone treatment like @ton312 ?
But once all the stickiness is gone, maybe you could dye it again, but this time properly?

I am not an expert but it looks like it was dyed a different color to me also. It makes you wonder if they were trying to cover stains or something.

This jacket has been soaked with oil. Dyeing cxl is next to impossible as getting the wax out is an almost insurmountable task. I’ve tried dying cxl swatches tan to brown and the result is always a metallic green. The alcohol based dyes that are available to consumers simply will not work. At least in my experience. And it’s clearly not had an acrylic dye applied, as that would be easy to chip and peel.

Looks like the owner applied far too much Obernaufs or similar oil. That will absolutely darken leather permanently. If saturated it’s essentially ruined. If applied correctly it works beautifully and is completely permanent.

A penetrating oil will wreak havoc on cxl if over applied and create a mushy sticky mess. That what looks like happened to this jacket. Marc’s assessment is exactly right IMO. Oil soaked cxl.
Return it or live with it.

Me if I didn't pay a kings ransom for it if improve it and live with it, but if I'd paid a fortune I wouldn't be happy
