I think @Mrfrown is correct as to the date of mfg impacting the cut. I am 5.9" and 146 lbs atm. The jacket I am wearing with only a thin t-shirt is a 1997 size 38 C2. The cut is unquestionably looser on on the current 38 (and sleeves are wider); as mrfrown has 30 lbs on me and the current stock 38 still looks big on him (not so his custom one, which looks great).

Hello fellow Loungers,

I’m reaching out to get some advice regarding the sizing of a Vanson leather jacket, specifically the C2 model. I’ve been eyeing this jacket, but I have some concerns about whether it will fit me correctly based on the measurements provided. I must admit that i am new in the leather jacket world and it is the first time i can afford them tbh.

My Measurements:

I am 1:74 cm and weigh about 74 kilograms

• Shoulder Width: 46 cm

• Chest (Half): 53.25 cm (106.5 cm total, 108 expanded)

• Arm Length: 60 cm

• Body Width: 54 cm (when considering the fit)

• Length: 58.5 cm (for overall length reference)

Jacket Measurements (Size 38):

• Shoulder Width: 46.5 cm

• Body Width: 53 cm

• Sleeve Length: 68 cm

• Length (Front): 59 cm

• Length (Back): 55.5 cm

According to the sizing chart on the website of Vanson, I’m typically in the range of size 40-42. However, the jacket I’m considering is labeled as size 38. I’ve read that vintage models can often run smaller than modern sizes, which adds to my confusion.

Given my measurements and the jacket’s specifications, do you think it would fit, or should I be cautious due to the size label? Additionally, if anyone has experience with the Vanson C2 model, I would greatly appreciate your insights on how it fits!

Thanks in advance for your help
Hey there,

Congrats on considering your first Vanson — they’re great jackets and built like tanks. I’ve owned a few Vanson pieces, including the C2, so I’ll do my best to help you out.

First off, your body measurements suggest that a size 40–42 would be more in your comfort range, as you mentioned. A size 38 could work, but it would be snug — especially in the shoulders and chest.

To give you a better reference, here’s a quick cm to inches conversion of your main measurements:

  • Height: 174 cm ≈ 5'8.5"
  • Shoulder Width: 46 cm ≈ 18.1"
  • Chest: 106.5–108 cm ≈ 42"–42.5"
  • Arm Length: 60 cm ≈ 23.6"
  • Body Width: 54 cm ≈ 21.3"
  • Jacket Shoulder: 46.5 cm ≈ 18.3"
  • Jacket Body Width: 53 cm ≈ 20.9"
  • Jacket Sleeve Length: 68 cm ≈ 26.8"
So while the shoulders line up nicely, the sleeves might be a bit long for you. The chest/body width is where it might get tight, especially if you're planning to layer underneath.

Also, vintage Vanson jackets, including the C2, are known to fit a bit smaller and boxier than modern sizing, and leather doesn't stretch dramatically — it molds with time, but won’t gain inches. If you’re new to leather, a too-tight fit can be discouraging, especially with a stiff hide like Vanson’s comp weight.

TL;DR: The size 38 could work if you're going for a tight, trim fit and don’t plan to wear layers. But based on your measurements and general comfort, a size 40 might give you more room to breathe and wear comfortably over time.

Hope this helps! Let us know what you decide.
