The Comet is one of several Vanson models I'd consider if the right one came up at the right price at the right time.... So far, however, all of them I've seen have had BlackWatch / Government Tartan lining, which is a big no for me. Is that standard, or were there other options?
Looking at Comets in the Vanson and Thurston Bros websites, I'm only seen black rayon linings.

Thanks. Must have been an older spec I've seen, then - or maybe a special run. Not many of them come up on eBay (in my size, anyhow).

Just curious why are you so against that particular lining pattern? Historic reasons related to the Black Watch?

Government Tartan, as it was originally and officially known, dates to the uniforms of military watches - known as Black Watches, hence the later renaming - that were used to keep down the Highland population in the wake if the 1715 Jacobite rebellion. After the 1745 second wave Jacobite rising, the wearing of Highland dress was banned through the highlands** - an exception being for those who took the King's shilling and signed up to the military, in which they could wear the kilt. It's been sanitised in Scotland today - a lot of things do lose the sting with time. I'd never tell anyone else not to wear it, but for me it has unpleasant associations with the brutality of the putting down of the 45, and the Highland Clearances that followed.

[**Edit to clarify my unintentional ***ism - Highland dress was banned for men - which essentially meant no kilt, unless they joined the Hanovarian army).
