Veterans

I thought about the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) today and thought this might be a good place to post this. I'm sure many of you already do this but I've spoken with a few who do not even know what the VFW is. What a better way to show your appreciate to "The Greatest Generation" (and others) than to donate not only your time but also your money to this non profit organization. I am not in any way affiliated with this organization at all but I love our Veterans that gave so much for us today. You can visit vgw.org. Just a thought

The VFW is a great place to chat with vets, but not about war, the war, any war. Growing up in a VFW environment, I found the vets go there for camaraderie, beer, the pretty barmaids, and to forget. The WWII gang, there are a few or them still able to belly up to the bar, but for the most part their drinking days are over, generally speaking.
I do concur that anyone willing to help the VFW (or any legit vet organization)should log on and see what they can do to help. Veterans organizations help vets keep their benefits and help those not knowing what benefits they are entitled to.

Thank you sir. I was hoping I wouldn't come across as trying to get on my 'high horse' but I really do try to give back to them in any way shape or form I can as they gave more for me (this nation) than I will ever be able too! It's very near and dear to my heart. I come from a long line of military. We can't forget 'em past or present!

I am actually presenting my first public speech in our community Thursday about the Wounded Warrior Project. I am nervous because I am not the best public speaker. But I have the motivation to inform the public about a wonderful organization and how supportive we should be of oour veterans. I highly recommend if you haven't read about this group to check out their Web site.

Thanks. I actually felt like I was in college again last night. Armed with a highlighter and pen, I made several notes to help me with my speech. Then I made sure the DVD played in all our laptops in case I grabbed the wrong one in a rush.

Ridiculous, I am sure. But instead of preparing with a pack of cigarettes and a cold one like in my college years, I had a bottle of milk for the little one and a plate of stuffed porkchops. Haha.

Seriously though, I feel a lot better about speaking about Wounded Warrior now, and I hope the crowd will join in my enthusiasm for the cause.

Let's not forget an organization that really needs the help. That one is the DAV or Disabled American Veterans of which I'm a life member. There are plenty of vets out there with other than physical disabilities that are in great need of support. We often talk about soldiers giving the ultimate sacrifice for their country but the disabled vets have given up their physical and mental health for their country and still have to carry on.

AMEN brother! I still need to join DAV and am waiting for the VA to "determine" if I have a disability (only been a year since I filed).

Here in Belgium, the people in general don't give a damn what our Vets have to go thru.
They only care for themselves in their own little world.

I posted the following on another thread, I haven't figured out if I can somehow post on more than one thread or if I should:

I am so sorry that I did not find this Thread until today. I started 11-11-11 at 11:11 by calling Jimmy. He had just returned from Iraq from his second tour. I told him that on this interesting confluence of numbers I was calling to honor his service with my personal thanks. I spent the rest of the day going around town to the stores and shops and every time I identified a veteran, I expressed my sentiments. One fellow told me that he had been to a funeral at 1100hr, a fellow vet.
My father was a proud veteran, he became a US citizen while serving in England, just before D-day. As an illegal alien he had joined up and was given the opportunity to become a citizen. He always felt that one should validate their citizenship with service.
Someone said once "They also serve who stand and wait". My sincere gratitude to all, the fallen and the ones waiting for their turn.
