Vintage Akubra . . .

Does anyone here know anything about vintage Akubras? Enough to be able to give me some help with a hat i just picked up? I can have pics up pretty soon if anyone is knowledgeable in this field.

This may be a thread where i need input from the down-under-ites.

cheers,

bk

p.s. The corwn sticker says Akubra Silverspur, Imperial Quality, pure fur. And under the sweatband is a label with the shape/reorder number/colour etc. information.

p.p.s. it is a western style but in very very soft fur felt, unlike any of the US western hats i've handled which tended to be very stiff.

Kind of. It seems to have a lower crown than the one on the site. The one i've got may very well be a modern hat. But all the indications from the innards are that it's pretty old. Mine is missing the ribbon/kangaroo pelt hatband so no help there.

It's one of those hats that i only bought because it was coming with a box. It's too big for me, too. And i look ridiculous with such a wide brim.

I bought my wife an older Akubra "JACKAROO". It's a cowboy style, and looks pretty good, even has a nice pattern of vents punched into the crown. It had, however shrunk almost two sizes. (I'm not stretching the truth here.) I did manage to rebuild the hat, but it was difficult to stretch that hat's crown!

My advice: before buying a vintage Akubra, find out the circumference! (Don't go by the size tag.)

Sorry, Baron, I wish I could help you, but apart from the rare 60s stingy brim, vintage fedoras here of any brand are rare as hens teeth. I don't know why that is, but rarely does one find a hat in a vintage clothing or antique store, and even when found, they invariably turn out to be in extremely poor condition.

The only vintage Akubras I think I've ever seen are on the heads of their original owners as they march in ANZAC Day ceremonies!
