Vintage inspired dressing for pageants

Hi every one, I need some assistance. Both of my children are going to be in a pageant in June/July, one of the J months. I have their formals all picked out, the 13yr old is going in a pretty 80s/90s inspired prom dress, purple underneath with a pink lacy over coat type deal with stars. (If I knew where it was at the moment I'd take a pic), and the 8 year old is going with a lavender drss with a slit with a cram undercoat showing.

The other outfit they must have is an interview outfit. I was thinking of doing something vintage inspired. For my 8 year old it would be easy to get her to do, she likes the 40 hairstyles when I play with her hair (when she has waisted most of the days energy, so usually thats at night lol). The 13 year old may be a little more difficult to persuade, but then all the outfits I have seen and suggested to her so far have been a big fat no. She is really into the skater/rocker look, and while she can have some of that coming out in the interview, they really would like something more job interview/church friendly going on.

So, any suggestions on what would be some good outfits for them?
Thanks so much

I don't have much experience with pageants, or even kids' clothes for that matter, but I had to say that your girls are too cute, faythe! Both of them look like they already have fashion down better than I do :D

Hmmm, as for vintage inspired interview outfits. Do you think your older girl might like to do a pencil skirt with a cute tailored jacket? I'm not sure how the judges feel about heels, but you might be able to find some sort of conservative shoe that's still vintage looking. Something with a peep toe perhaps. Then again, that's not much like the skater/rocker chick she's hoping for :)

Maybe your younger girl could wear a polka dot dress, cardigan, bobby socks and some cute mary janes?

Man, I didn't know just how unqualified I was for this until I started typing lol

Anyone else help a sister out?

If your thirteen-year-old is more into the rocker-type look, maybe try going more 50's with her look, perhaps rockabilly-ish? That would let her be a bit more alternative looking than the more put-together 40's look, and still have a great vintage flair... just an idea.

Both of your daughters are so beautiful! Best of luck in the pageants!

One day when the oldest was actually getting along with her little sister (it actually happens more than not, but sometimes it just doesnt seem like it lol) and playing with her hair, it wound up coming out looking like vintage barbie doll, you know what I mean, like when Barbie first came out. So I it got me to thinking that was how I wanted the youngest to be for her interview portion of the pageant. For the interview portion, they are taken into a room and go from table to table for an one on one interview of about 3-4 minutes, almost like speed dating, but speed interviews....lol...with the judges, it is supposed to give them an idea of what to expect of interviews and how to conduct themselves in an interview setting in the real world.

I was out and about looking for ideas and this is what I bought. What think you? Something missing?

For some reason I can't find any good pics of 1950s Barbie or find the right words to google for classic girls styles of the 1950s. I get pinups. I found a nice one of JBD in a maids outfit talking on the phone though! lol

I've been in a pageant before and I can tell you that traditional is what goes - just like for job interviews. I wouldn't have your girls do anything too out there or funky, which probably includes vintage. I think that's just going to be too outside of the status quo for the judges.

That said, your girls are adorable. Good luck to them!

Pageant photos

Here are a few photos from the weekend. The girls had a great time until the finial pageant. The little on took not placing extremely hard. Some times I think she is going to be a little Emo girl when she gets a bit older. From what my mom told me when it came time for her personal introduction infront of the judges she got nervous and at one point almost said she was her sister. lol (This was the day that both girls had things going on and I couldn't be in both places at once.) But Saphy said she talked to the judges at the one on one with no problem, she just couldn't remember anything they asked her.

Jade handled it a lot better this year. I also told her she did better this year, especially with her personal intro. Last year she froze up and couldnt remember what to say how to end it. So she ended it with "goodbye?".
She remembered her whole introduction this year, adlibed a bit, and since she adlibed she repeated her self once and then confused her self for a second. But she kept her smile and said thank you. She wanted to do talent, so we entered her and she sung the second half of Hurt by Christina Aguilaria (I know I am spelling it wrong) she did great, and did a great job of continuing on when she confused a word.
She handled her disappointment a lot better this year. At least this time she said she never wants to do it again. Thats what she told me last year, then a few weeks later told me she did. lol Kids! The girls that placed in the top 5 for talent were all dancers except one girl and she sung a very energetic song called shy, opposed to Jades melancholy choice.
We keep telliing them that they are winners for being chosen to represent their state, not everyone is chosen to go that far. And when we were regestering Jade a model agent stopped us to take her info, and she was not stopping all the girls.
Jade interview (she did have dress shoes on, she had already took them off and put on the th flip flops)

The talent outfit.( I was a little worried about this for a moment, the design on top also goes around to the side, for a moment I thought it would across her breast but it didnt. Anyway, another girl was dressed as a showgirl for her talent, which was even less age appropiate)
