Visual effect of a bound edge

How do you feel a bound edge effects the perceived width of the brim? Along the lines of a thinner ribbon making a crown look taller, does a bound edge make the brim appear wider or shorter? My gut feeling is that it will make it look shorter. What say you?

Karl...my view is it definitely gives the edge a visual point of ending...I'm not sure it makes it look shorter...but it also adds something else thats hard to put into words....[huh]
