Re-shaping the crown on one of my Cowboy Shooting hats, sparked an idea for one for every day wear. A workable candidate (a mid-to-late-70s Resistol Hi-7) showed up for sale a day or two later, and I jumped on it.

It arrived earlier this week, and here's the result. I punched the crown out to it’s full height, then gave it a sizeable rear dent, a slightly indented top, and a severe, slightly asymmetrical, front pinch.

I am SUPER happy with how this turned out, and it accompanied me on my numerous out-and-about tasks early this morning. View attachment 704488 View attachment 704489
Awesome look, Mark! The hi-7 is one of my favorites — so much you can do with them.

Miller Fine Hats, Denver, CO, 4X Quality. This hat came in it's original box with a 1969 postage date. For sale on eBay now for ridiculous price. Sweatband shows they were still using the Leakproof and Sweatproof phrase in 1969.

Gorgeous, Mike. I've been watching that, but I'd have to hit a lottery before I'd spend that on a Miller.

Got this one in a 4 hat auction batch. I figured, like the others in the batch, it must date from at least the 1960's, if not earlier. I emailed the current owner of the company, Rockmount Ranchwear, in Colorado (est 1946) and he could only confirm it predates his time at the company (1981). This one must have been a Yellowstone souvenir one could purchase back in the day. Rockmount still makes hats and western-wear (check out their website).

Awesome! My 2 30+ year old kids are now fighting over which one of them gets to keep it. Love this stuff.

This one arrived today, thanks to a tip from one of several friends who notify me when they come across something they think is up my alley.

Worth brand, made by the Harris-Polk Hat Co. of St. Louis.

It was sold through Ten Sleep Mercantile, in Ten Sleep, Wyoming. An American Indian rest stop, the town was so called because it was 10 days' travel, or “10 sleeps,” from both Fort Laramie and Yellowstone National Park, as well as the Indian Agency on the Stillwater River in Montana. The Mercantile was built in 1905, and the building still stands to this day, although no longer housing a general store.

I’d estimate it to be a 1920s vintage, making it the second-oldest hat in my collection. It’s in remarkable shape, (other than missing its lining), with tremendous dimensions: a 7.5” open crown, currently creased to 6.5” at the rear, and 4.5” at the front, with a 1.75” ribbon. The bound brim is 5” wide, with a ¾” kettle curl. I may or may not add some curl and dip to the crown; I haven't decided yet.

That's a wonderful find, Mark. Love the history behind it, too.

Congrats!
