My gf has recently had rhinoplasty and, counselled by her surgeon not to take direct sunlight to her nose, she's been wearing a hat. That has opened my eyes to how hats can be fashionable, in spite of them being very underworn

I'm considering buying that very fedora in the pic, whaddya reckon?

Btw, she doesn't wear a fedora. She wears a panama with the brim wider on the front.

Oh, and I've been told many a time I'd look try hard wearing it and should not go for that lovely fedora. Afraid to be misleaded, I have searched and stumbled uppn these boards, where the gents realltly know what they are talking about. So, what goes with the fedora?

Peps, am I right in thinking it's pretty hot where you guys live?

If so, you might be better to follow the GF example (you know the ladies are always right) and get yourself a Panama too.

Yeap, tropical area. Hot, indeed. I tried the hat on a store, and while it doesnt feel as suited to our climate as the panamas, it certainly goes much better with my facial features and looks overall.

What does a black fedora go with? Could it work with jeans or shorts and a casual tee.l, or would it look tryhard?

So much involved in what looks good on someone.. Your face shape for one... very difficult to select without knowing a lot more......

I tend to agree with DJH, about a panama and you can get them at just about any price and any brim/crown size.......

I agree +1 I think panamas are a nice casual hat, and you both wearing one would be cute. Of course, you might not like cute lol

You will probably get some negative words like "tryhard" if you wear a hat, most people on the Lounge have experienced this, but we continue to wear them!

Black clothing in general in the tropics does not sound like a good idea to me.

Personally, I would choose a Panama with more of a fedora crown, but to each his own.

To answer the original question ... Panamas go with everything ... yeah, I think that's right ... everything

Maybe not "tails" but you could certainly wear a Panama with a dinner jacket. I have done that. OK not recently, but back in the Dark Ages when I was in college, I would wear a dinner jacket like Bogart wore in Casablanca, to theater parties and I would routinely wear an Oleg Cassini Panama with it. It looked great.

Panamas also look terrific with shorts and an Aloha shirt or with jeans and a western shirt.

Of course IMHO, so do classic fur felt fedoras, for that matter, but the Panama is great ... right up until Labor Day, of course
