Symphony Space's "Selected Shorts" podcast, readings of short stories by notable Broadway and Hollywood talent. (Yes, I know 'Hollywood talent' is an oxymoron).

Aaaannnndd, two short stories read on the podcast of The New Yorker Fiction podcast, "A&P" by Updike and "The Swimmer" by Cheever.

It's Tiki Time.

These little cuties are accompanied by Hapa Haole music, a product of Hawaii in the 20's and
30's.

Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra -- Mr. Radio Man (1924)

For those of you familiar with Al Jolson's better-known recording, Paul Whiteman gives this sad song a strangely peppy, upbeat take. But as this is an instrumental version the incongruity is not apparent.

Some people that I know have the opinion that married life is not the way to go
They compared to being in a prison well if they're right I won't them all to know
I'm livin' in Lovenworth livin' in Lovenworth and doin' time with her's not bad at all
I'm livin' in Lovenworth livin' in Lovenworth and me and the warden have a ball

The warden wakes me up with morning kisses three little inmates pull me out of bad
Hard labor in the backyard on the weekends and all the boys around here call me dad
I'm livin' in Lovenworth...
[ guitar ]
Kisses are the bars that keep me in this place
The walls are lovin' arms that hold me tight
I guess I could be free if I wanted to be but I like the way the warden say goodnight
I'm livin' in Lovenworth...
Yeah me and the warden have a ball

The upstairs neighbour a-thumpin'-and-a-bumpin'. He likes slamming his furniture around and walking on his heels. I do believe that it's time to do some dishes to some loud-a*s swing. I'm thinking 1950's Count Basie.

Most of the posts are about music, but...Just listened to the Lux Radio Theatre 1947 version of Somewhere in the Night. Contained the common Noir theme of an amnesiac WWII vet who, in an attempt to regain his identity, discovers that he might have a shady past. Starred John Hodiak and Lynn Bari, who both did admirably.

Lilian Harvey, Willy Fritsch, Paul Kemp & Oskar Sima -- Ich Wollt' Ich Wär' Ein Huhn (1936)
(I Wish I Was A Chicken)

This nonsensical but charming song is from the film Glückskinder (Lucky Kids), an adaptation of It Happened One Night.

I wish I was a chicken
With nothing to do but lay eggs all day
And even two on Sunday
I don't need fame and fortune
If I got lucky I'd just eat it all
And never have to work anymore
I'd be dumb but happy
