It's June 15, 1937 -- and the National Broadcasting Company takes us to the Astor Roof atop the Hotel Astor in New York City for the music of Rudy Vallee and his Connecticut Yankees, with vocals by Judy Starr and the Swing Kids and the occasional interpolation by Mr. Vallee hisself. The NBC engineer must've been out taking a nip, because he has the vocal mic potted down as the Kids start in on "Scattin' At The Kit Kat." Rudy does not sound pleased when he breaks in with an announcement. Someone's gonna hear about it in the morning, you can bet.

I think the most graphic song from that era was 1947's "Butcher Pete" by Roy Brown

Let's Pretend There's a Moon - Russ Columbo with Jimmie Grier's Orch., 1934. Russ' last recording date, and maybe performance, before the freak accident that took his life. One hell of a song, deserving of revival - makes me think Columbo could have become the first big-time singer-songwriter if he'd lived.
