Annette Hanshaw, "Telling It To the Daisies":
(written by Harry Warren & Joe Young, 1930)

Why am I so bashful, so afraid to part
With a lot of love words locked up in my heart
For the want of courage foolishly I’ve tried
To conceal what I reveal by a countryside

Telling it to the daisies,
Hoping they’ll tell you too
Pouring my heart out to them
But it never gets back to you

What do I do on Sunday?
Under those lonely skies
Same as I do on Monday
But they never do put you wise

Oh, I’m so in love with you, and
Oh, I feel you’re never gonna know
Unless the birdies tell you so

I know I’m wasting a lot of love time
Time and again I’m blue
Telling it to the daisies
But it never gets back to you.

(Musical Break)

I know I’m wasting a lot of love time
Time and again I’m blue
Telling it to the daisies
But it never gets back to you.

YEAH!!! That's a great song! I've heard a few different versions of that song... can't recall the artist though... A friend of mine has it on CD and I always enjoyed that song because it starts out with these guys scatting all jazzy like and then the singer says: Boy's, (pause) that ain't no way to talk to the good ol' daisies, listen! Then it get's older fashioned as he sings and not so jazzy... lol it's a great song! Annette Hanshaw is great, I love her songs... she's sweet.

It was the first Hanshaw song I ever heard, and it immediately endeared her to me. "That's all!" :)

Well put!;)

She had a nice style, I enjoy her songs and "Something Good Will Come from that" is a favorite of mine she covers. Ruth Etting is my favorite for early 30s singing. I also love Connie Boswell... What a voice!

My favorite song Ruth covers is "In your own back yard"... so sweet and lovely, she really sang that well. *Sigh*

Santa Baby
By Joan Javits and Philip Springer

Santa baby, slip a sable under the tree,
For me.
been an awful good girl,
Santa baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight.

Santa baby, a 54 convertible too,
Light blue.
I'll wait up for you dear,
Santa baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight.

Think of all the fun I've missed,
Think of all the fellas that I haven't kissed,
Next year I could be just as good,
If you'll check off my Christmas list,

Santa baby, I wanna yacht,
And really that's not a lot,
Been an angel all year,
Santa baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight.

Santa honey, there's one thing I really do need,
The deed
To a platinum mine,
Santa honey, so hurry down the chimney tonight.

Santa cutie, and fill my stocking with a duplex,
And checks.
Sign your 'X' on the line,
Santa cutie, and hurry down the chimney tonight.

Come and trim my Christmas tree,
With some decorations bought at Tiffany's,
I really do believe in you,
Let's see if you believe in me,

Santa baby, forgot to mention one little thing,
A ring.
I don't mean on the phone,
Santa baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight,
Hurry down the chimney tonight,
Hurry, tonight.

Golden Gate (1928)
recorded by Al Jolson
Brunswick 3775

You are talking of Heaven
When you talk of the West
As a sample of Heaven
California is best

I'm getting tired of the rain and snow
My weary brain is crying, "Westward Ho!"
Train pulls out at eleven
For that rose-covered nest

Golden Gate, I'm coming to ya!
Golden Gate, sing Hallelujah!
I'll live in the sun, love in the moon
Where every month is June

A little sun-kissed blonde is coming my way
Just beyond that Lincoln Highway
I'm going strong now, won't be long now
Open up that Golden Gate!

Mountains and mountains
Rivers and fountains
Rocks that are aged and worn
Acre after acre of the richest soil
A hundred million billion barrels of oil
Prairies and prairies
Cattle and dairies
Under a heaven of blue
And right at the tail, the end of the trail
Hundreds of boats sailing through that

Golden Gate, I'm coming to ya!
Golden Gate, sing Hallelujah!
I'll live in the sun, love in the moon
Where every month is June

A little sun-kissed blonde is coming my way
Right beyond that Lincoln Highway
I'm going strong now, won't be long now
Open up that Golden Gate!

Steppin' Out (1924)
recorded by Al Jolson with Isham Jones and his Orchestra
Brunswick 2567

Dishes and rolling pins, pots and pans
Furniture, silverware, old tin cans
Around the flat were flying
I heard a lady crying

Neighbors all hollered out, "Won't you stop?"
"Cut it out! Cut it out! Call a cop!"
Slam went the door
And a man began to roar

Steppin' out, now I'm through
Steppin' out, done with you
When we wed we both said life would be one sweet song
Though we had lots of words all the music was wrong

Steppin' out, taking air
Steppin' out on a tear
If you want me night or day, look in any swell café
And you'll find me steppin' out

Everybody in our block knows how wicked you can sock
Firpo, Willard, Dempsey too, Never had a thing off you!
Every night I'd call a cop, Oh, but he wouldn't make you stop
Each one came and took a chance, flirted with the ambulance

Steppin' out, no more fights
Steppin' out, nighty night
When we wed people said what a wonderful match
It was all playing ball. When you'd pitch I would catch!

Steppin' out, no remorse
Steppin' out means divorce
Get a summons out for me, try to serve it and you'll see
That you'll find me steppin' out

Steppin' out, no remorse
Steppin' out means divorce
Though I know I'll lose my wife, I'm not gonna lose my life!
That's why I'm steppin' out!

V.C. Brunswick has some early tastes! Welcome!

I like Jolson, he's fun! What a name he made for himself back in those days when recording on Brunswick and Columbia!

Another singer I enjoy is Irving Kaufman! He recorded A LOT! On different labels and under different names most of the time! lol

What I like about many of Jolson's recordings are the clever lyrics, such as this one:

Where Did Robinson Crusoe Go With Friday On Saturday Night? (1916)

recorded by Al Jolson
Columbia A-1976

Over a thousand years or maybe more
Out on an island on a lonely shore
Robinson Crusoe landed one fine day
No rent to pay, no wife to obey
His good man Friday was his only friend
He didn't borrow or lend
They built a little hut, lived there till Friday but
Saturday night it was shut

Where did Robinson Crusoe go with Friday on Saturday night?
Every Saturday night they would start in to roam
And on Sunday morning they'd come staggering home
They went hunting for rabbit when the weather grew colder
But Crusoe came home with a hare on his shoulder
Now where did Robinson Crusoe go with Friday on Saturday night?

Robinson Crusoe was a good old scout
Robinson Crusoe knew his way about
He'd go out hunting chickens now and then
But he knew when he was chasing a hen
Once he told Friday, you must stay at home, I gotta go out alone
Friday felt very blue, he said it's wrong of you, couldn't you fix it for two?

Where did Robinson Crusoe go with Friday on Saturday night?
One fine Saturday night they had nothing to do
So they started counting all the girlies they knew
Friday counted to thirteen and Crusoe said, Brother!
You know thirteen's unlucky then go get another!
So where did Robinson Crusoe go with Saturday night?

Where did Robinson Crusoe go with Friday on Saturday night?
Every night they would start in to roam
And on Sunday morning they'd come staggering home
On this island lived wild men in cannibal trimming
And you know where there are wild men there must be wild women!
So where did Robinson Crusoe go with Friday on Saturday night?

Sorry if this has been posted already.

Was I? by Charlie Farrell and Chick Endor. A young girl goes out and, under the alfluence of incahol, surrenders her maidenhood to a fellow she has just met. The next day she ponders her feelings of confusion and ambivilence as she contemplates her new status as a "woman."

Was I drunk?
was he handsome?
And did momma give me hell?
Did I get a thrill?
Am I full of quiver?
Was he rough?
Did I care?
Am I glad now that I fell?
Every time I think about him do I shiver?
Was he hot?
And was I?
And would he stand for maybe?
He would not,
Did I lie?
Does he still think i'm a baby?
If I was, am I still?
Do I care?
No big deal.
Was I drunk?
Was he handsome?
And did momma give me hell?

so many have been quoted! But one of favourites still not mentioned:

Josephine Baker: La petite Tonkinoise
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfONhdg3aiE

and words of this charming chanconette:

One of my favorite Josephine Baker recordings! The song dates back to 1906 and there's two or three different versions of the lyrics. This recording is from 1930 and she's accompanied by Le Jazz du Poste Parisien. She recorded it again sometime in the '50s.

I believe the original version was about a soldier stationed in French Indochina who's going home after many years' service and he's reminiscing about his "Little Tonkinoise". Here's Josephine Baker's 1953 version, this time accompanied by her husband Jo Bouillon and his orchestra.

Every little breeze seems to whisper 'Louise.'
Birds in the trees seem to twitter 'Louise.'
Each little rose tells me it knows I love you.(love you)
Every little beat that I feel in my heart
Seems to repeat what I felt at the start.
Each little sigh tells me that I adore you, Louise.

We're Back Together Again (1925)
music by Jimmie Monaco
lyrics by Sidney Clare

Gotta spread the news, lost my lonesome blues
I must tell you just why
It's been just a week that we didn't speak
I mean my baby and I
I felt mighty sad, I felt kind of bad
Until we met today
First we took a walk then we had a talk
I'm delighted to say

We're back together again, my baby and me
Doing the same things over, Oh Gee
Life is so rosy, sweeter once more
Things are much nicer now than ever before
We're oh so happy again, my baby and me
We've had our troubles but then
Our love is much stronger and our kisses are longer
Since we're back together again

No one ever knew just what I went through
But it's all over now
Didn't realize I apologized
But I did it somehow
Will I be so proud, will I see the crowd
When they knock at my door
I can see them grin when I let them in
Just to tell them once more

We're back together again, my baby and me
Doing the same things over, Jiminy Gee
They say in time that everything heals
I've just been through it and I know how it feels
And so we're at it again, my baby and me
We've had our quarrels but then
Each minute that passes I just claim it's molasses
Since we're back together again

We're back together again, my baby and me
Both on the level but then
I can't tell who's winning cause' the fight's just beginning
Since we're back together again.

It's Tulip Time In Holland (1915)

Where the dikes of quaint old Holland
Guards the city from the sea
Stands a queer old-fashioned windmill
And it seems to beckon me
To that land of peace and romance
Where the tulip blooms so fair
To a little maid of Holland
Who is waiting for me there

It's tulip time in Holland
Two lips I know are lonely
The sweetest lips in Holland
Are blooming for me only
I'd give the world if I could be
Back there beside her by the Zuider Zee
It's tulip time in Holland
Two lips are calling me

When the springtime comes to Holland
When the fragrant tulips grow
It is like a spot from Heaven
Just transported here below
From this fancy I can see her
In that garden by the sea
Where we strolled among the tulips
Where she's waiting now for me

It's tulip time in Holland
Two lips I know are lonely
The sweetest lips in Holland
Are blooming for me only
I'd give the world if I could be
Back there beside her by the Zuider Zee
It's tulip time in Holland
Two lips are calling me

Bewitched, Bothered And Bewildered

After one whole quart of brandy
Like a daisy, I'm awake
With no Bromo-Seltzer handy
I don't even shake

Men are not a new sensation
I've done pretty well I think
But this half-pint imitation
Put me on the blink

I'm wild again, beguiled again
A simpering, whimpering child again
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am I

Couldn't sleep and wouldn't sleep
When love came and told me, I shouldn't sleep
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am I

Lost my heart, but what of it
He is cold I agree
He can laugh, but I love it
Although the laugh's on me

I'll sing to him, each spring to him
And long, for the day when I'll cling to him
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am I

He's a fool and don't I know it
But a fool can have his charms
I'm in love and don't I show it
Like a babe in arms

Love's the same old sad sensation
Lately I've not slept a wink
Since this half-pint imitation
Put me on the blink

I've sinned a lot, I'm mean a lot
But I'm like sweet seventeen a lot
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am I

I'll sing to him, each spring to him
And worship the trousers that cling to him
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am I

When he talks, he is seeking
Words to get off his chest
Horizontally speaking, he's at his very best

Vexed again, perplexed again
Thank God, I can be oversexed again
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am I

Wise at last, my eyes at last,
Are cutting you down to your size at last
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - no more

Burned a lot, but learned a lot
And now you are broke, so you earned a lot
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - no more

Couldn't eat, was dispeptic
Life was so hard to bear
Now my heart's antiseptic
Since you moved out of there

Romance, finis.
Your chance, finis.
Those ants that invaded my pants, finis.
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - no more

Many versions, but I think Doris did it best:

As much as all these songs are rather nice, I always find myself thinking of songs that are very filled with the love of our Nation that existed back in the day, so to speak. Patriotic songs, the National Anthem, songs of that venue. For me, the old days and golden age, seemed to have more of a following for everyone to stand up for freedom, to elect the fellowship of being proud to belong to a free society.

Now more than not, we have less of these patriotic songs being played or sung by society, unless you attend a ball game, or a military funeral.

These lyrics are among my favorites! :D

My Baby Just Cares For Me

My baby don't care for shows
My baby don't care for clothes
My baby just cares for me
My baby don't care for cars and races
My baby don't care for high-tone places

Liz Taylor is not his style
And even Lana Turner's smile
Is somethin' he can't see
My baby don't care who knows
My baby just cares for me

Baby, my baby don't care for shows
And he don't even care for clothes
He cares for me
My baby don't care
For cars and races
My baby don't care for
He don't care for high-tone places

Liz Taylor is not his style
And even Liberace's smile
Is something he can't see
I wonder what's wrong with baby
My baby just cares for
My baby just cares for
My baby just cares for me

I like "She's Got It", "When You're Over Sixty But You Feel Like Sweet Sixteen", and two risque ones: "My Girl's Pussy", and "Something To Remember." I always giggle when these come up on my iPod. lol They are so clever.
