Trial and error Foamy. Keep in mind as you keep wearing your taste may change a bit but you'll eventually find a variety of hats that you'll like. If u can get to a hat store and try on different styles the process will become alot easier.
Thanks for the encouragement.

Great lids everyone. I like all of the choices for the past couple of days. The straws get me going.

'Ol faithful today. An inexpensive Cuenca. One of my first purchases.

Hey all!
Esther, the two-tone felt is really cool.
Mayser, love the brim on that one. Heck, I love everything else about it too.
Today was hot and sunny, so I went with my Borsalino, which is my lightest weight felt. By the time 2 hours had passed, didb't matter how light it was, still a sweaty head day.

Going straw for the rest of the afternoon.

My second-oldest son is wearing the cool hat in this picture. He got a degree in economics today. I'm in my Akubra Sydney, despite temps in the 90s.

Congrats Knotten. You deserve to be very proud. And I bet that is one expensive hat your son is wearing!

Spent all day with the Falcon Park... my only beaver felt.

Thanks to all of you gents!

Very nice Greg, Perry... and a great bit of photo editing there, TJones!

Esther, I'm enjoying seeing your handiwork. Curious about the silk ribbon. I have a few very early hats that predate the entrance of rayon on the millinery scene. The silk ribbon is very soft and supple compared to the crispier character of rayon. Is it possible to duplicate this with today's materials? Photo below from a hat made around 1905:

Well, that's a good question!
Yes and no? Does that make any sense?

The vintage silk ones are very different from modern day ones. Modern silk ribbon is a bit .. Floppy?

Left is french vintage, right was bought a month ago.
The look is different, but you can still get that nice shiny full bow effect.
Unfortunately on the ones made today the color range is very limited and they are stupidly expensive.
However! I found silk taffeta grosgrain, i think that looks the most "authentic"
Soft, flexible etc. pic below

You can find nice rayon, look for the mat ones. When rayon has a shine to it the chances are that it's mostly polyester.
The weave on those is also very fine.

100% cotton is a bit chunky for those nice hats, I have however found a nice cotton polyester blend that works very well. Surprisingly the finished effect was pretty good.

Left to right. : rayon, cotton/polyester, 100% cotton.

Hope that was helpfull?

I wore this lumpy old Royal Stetson while out taking care of a few things late yesterday.
Enjoy the weekend, everyone!

Howdy, Dale... The Stetson ROCKS, man! The genuine article!!

Good morning to all on this drizzly Saturday. IT will stop raining soon (it always does) but I started the day in Maclachlan felt!
