I took a cue from Justin and ofcoursemyhorse in the derby thread this morning, and donned this beautiful old Knox vented brown derby for my morning coffee.
Who knows what the rest of my day will entail? Afternoon coffee? Evening coffee?

I very seldom wear a suit. After looking in the mirror I realize I need a formal hat for special occasions. Maybe a black Homburg? Had to go hatless to my daughter's graduation party.
Some Mexican parties end so late breakfast is served at 4 am. This one will.

Looking sharp my friend! Congratulations to your daughter. Yes, a fine vintage homburg in black or gray needs to be in your stable.

Unless you’re going white tie you don’t need a top hat and if you’re not in a dinner jacket (tuxedo) you don’t “need” a homburg. Fedoras look great with suits. Still, I do like a homburg and personally prefer them when wearing a suit when I need to look my best. There’s just something about the perfect homburg.

This morning rain is threatening for a morning dog walk. A trusty Akubra CD (bluegrass) was my easy choice off the hat rack.

best, Eric -
Love the ribbon on that Mallory Eric. I need a trusty Aussie like that, we have to dodge raindrops on a regular basis here in Oregon.

A lovely morning here, but a thunderstorm is fast approaching. Under the Melvin

Was planning a leisurely shopping trip on my bicycle. May have to rethink that, or at least my attire.

Have a great Saturday,
Michael
Such a lovely summer suit Michael. The Melvin is a perfect match.

Thanks Jeff.

BTW: I do like your pics of dog walk and dinner for one. All too frequently that is the exact situation at my house. Your pics showcasing your recent gigs I have enjoyed. Your VS Bobby Blue fedora has to be my all time fav hat I see you in. Love the inspiration of the hat and the dimensions and features.

Today will be intermitant heavy rain storms. Just shortly ago I was outside doing normal chores in a straw. Below are pics of the Sea Spray. This straw has clever vents. I am uncertain whether the vents do a lot, but I definately like the feature.

That is one perfect looking straw Eric. There is a Sea Spray on Ebay right now, looks like a loose weave mundane straw. But it does have that cool sweat logo.

There is a lot to love about that Knox Jeff! It does look to have some age to it. Color is a bucket list addition. Goes well with coffee!

Rocking the Dobbs straw...

Stopped in at Texas Hatters in Lockhart TX this morning, almost ordered this beaver / straw halfbreed, but $900.00 <sigh> I just couldn't do it. Love the look. :)

View attachment 121829

Texas Hatters has a number of offerings that I would like to have, the halfbreed being one of them. There are just other hatters out there offering quality products for much less money.

It's just that my fedoras looked too wide-brimmed for a night event... Something wasn't right. And the blue one was too light-colored.
Look, I took pictures before leaving for the prom.
The rest are of my family minus Sabrina, my other daughter, and a couple of the buildings next to where the event was held taken this morning. I took those because you expressed an interest in Mexico City, Brent. As you can see, the stereotypical third-world image of the city is long gone.
The party ended at 5:25 AM, so Maralisa just stayed at the hotel. I picked her up today wearing my Camel Manhattan.

I'm far from being a fashion expert, but speaking from an aesthetics perspective I don't think the brim width or colors were as much of a "problem" as the tapered crowns you prefer. With the simple lines of the suit and the squared off appearance of the shoulders, I think a hat with a straight-sided crown and a "square" crease (i.e., Teardrop, Diamond, maybe even a simple Center Dent) that mirrored those shapes would have worked nicely.

Of course, that's just my opinion; I could be wrong.

In the end, if you don’t like the look or feel comfortable with it then don’t wear it. I sometimes go without a hat because I don’t want it to be about me and a hat. Sometimes I also go sans hat to my wife’s events as I dress for her on those occasions. The good news is that vintage homburgs are relatively plentiful and sell for reasonable prices...unless you have a larger head.

The Mexico in your photos is not the border towns of my college days. I’m not much of a big city guy these days, but your photos are intriguing. I think I’d have to go on my own as it’s too far from the beach for my wife.

And a beautiful family. I forgot to mention. I like hats, but I try to keep things in perspective.

Oh, brother! It is hotter than the hinges hanging the gates of hell here today. So, I broke out my trusty old white canvas Panama Jack. Picked this one up on Miami Beach eons ago and it still serves me well today.

I'd love to show it to ya'll but I can't figure out how to make an iPhone photo small enough for it to upload to this site.
