That's what happens from the front when you put deep creases in a straight sided crown. When viewed from the side, it gives you the "reverse taper".

That picture is August 1972. The picture in the cowboy hat is September 1972. He greased it down or pulled it into a ponytail.

The picture above is from the funeral of Senator Carl Hayden, who died in January 1972. As you can see, from all appearances, LBJ's hair is short. For more formal events, he curled it up, to make it appear short, as in this photo, also from 1972:

This is the first time I've ever heard the phrase hippy hair, used by anyone other than my mother. To this day, my mother will go "you need a haircut, you're getting hippy hair going on there!"

Which presidents wore hats? All of them up to JFK. There are great pics out there of JFK wearing fedoras, but only early on in his Senatorial days.

April 10th 1961 (Opening day at Griffith Stadium):

April 22nd 1961, with Ike at Camp David

April 24th 1961 (meeting with President Sukarno of Indonesia):

June 4th 1961 (Vienna Summit with Khrushchev)

November 26th 1962 (meeting with British PM MacMillian):

Yep, he did sometimes. About 80% or more I hear, he was mostly hatless though. Even when he had a hat, he carried it around a lot.

Most come from VERY reputable sources: The New York Times, Corbis, Life Magazine, etc. I very much doubt if any of them are photoshopped.

Yes but as I discover new photos and new info which prove JFK did--at times--wear a fedora, I just find it appropriate to clear JFK's name as the "killer" of the hat. The story often goes that because JFK "never wore a hat" or "appeared bareheaded at his Inauguration", the hat died as part of men's wear. He's basically blamed by the media and thus by people in general as the guy who marked the end of hat wearing.

Not only that, but sometimes the rumor is twisted to, "He wore it because a friend of his urged him to in 1961", yet we see numerous photos here--at many different times, some personal, some political--of him either holding or wearing a hat. And I bet that the hats he's holding were on his head at some point during the photographed meetings.
