I could never choose just one, and there are way too many that I haven't heard but that I know I'd love. But I recently got the Ella Fitzgerald "12 Nights in Hollywood" compendium, and I'm here to testify that it's every bit as brilliant as everyone says it is.

Although there are some who would not consider all of these to be jazz...my list is, in alphabetical order:

Artie Shaw - The Complete Gramercy Five Sessions
Artie Shaw - Begin the Beguine
Benny Goodman - The Complete Small Group Recordings
Benny Goodman - Complete Trios
Bill Evans w/Stan Getz - But Beautiful
Bill Evans Trio - Waltz for Debby
Chet Baker - Chet Baker Sings!
Junior Mance Trio - At The Village Vanguard
Mel Powell - The Best Things in Life
Oscar Peterson - On The Town
Pee Wee Russell - Swingin' with Pee Wee
Teddy Wilson - Nan Wynn Sessions
Tommy Dorsey Orchestra - 1942 War Bonds Broadcast
Woody Herman - Capitol 1939-1940

Of course there are many more...but these bad boys are quite addictive.

Oscar Peterson - Motions and Emotions

Wandering has to be one of my favourite piano songs I've heard:

I like to play this when I drive over the bay bridge at night into San Francisco.

mmm good question

Vocal albums mainly spring to mind for me

Songs for Swingin' Lovers - Frank Sinatra
The best of Chet Baker Sings - Chet Baker
Ella & Louis - Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, and the Oscar Peterson Quartet
Best of Mose Allison - Mose Allison Great singer with a smooth laid back style. Born 1927 and still producing albums

It's nice when they're not dead yet. I've seen Mose many times. He's one of a kind.
