This is a Tonak that I purchased to re-block for myself. I would guess it was from the late 60's or even 70's from the original proportions.

This one is not a great felt quality, neither was the original finish work. Most likely a low cost hat. I am pretty sure it has some wool in it from the feel. Also, not a very long nap to the felt and the lines only appear on the top. I have seen one other on Etsy from this same period that has lines on the underside of the brim as well. I would be curious to see other examples.

I know, but are anybody doing wet scratching these days? I remember to have seen a video from one of the European felting/hat companies - I don't remember if it was Polka or Tonak. In the video, the shown velourizing process was dry scratching. I believe, the video was from the 60s(?)

I have no idea but I would like to know. I wish I knew to ask when I visited Tonak.

Tonak still does. I can occasional source them from one of my millinery supply houses but they don't always stock them. If you go to Tonak's site you will find a few patterns on their last page of Prints and designs under Products. I like the idea of offering them, but I don't see it as an option that most people would go for these days, so the bulk ordering of a full run of one color just doesn't seem worth the investment to me.

Interesting! I agree it wouldn't be too big a risk as a bulk order in one color. Do you know the fur make up?

I will definitely keep a lookout for something similar. Also if I learn anything I will update.

I received a reply back from a contact at Tonak regarding their current sculpted "Panter" felt.

"You sent me picture of our hatbodie - name of this hatbodie is "Panter number 7" and it is made of felt in a conventional manner (as you see in TONAK last time)

From rabbit hare.

After making the hatbodie - it is pressed on a special form.
It creates the plastic relief (plastic effect)"

Yes definitely!

Here is some more information from a friend in Germany.

"Yes, Mayser offered two models with this "sculpted felt" some years ago. I sold them all ... it's a nice effect.

It's 'gefräst' (fräsen) ...don't know an right english word."

These 2 belong to Garret and came from Steve's (mayserwegener) great 1930's NOS find. The first is a nice gray and the second is a wild one almost beyond description:

Almost forgot this one, another of Garrett's, another "Gefräst" ~ "Routed" or "Milled". How about a spinner hat ;)

By the way the first hat (light gray speckled felt) is a Karl Misik (KAMI) "Special". My guess is it was made during the war or just after. The second hat was made by Janyška & Cie. and probably 1930s. Yes it's beyond description including the band with colored fur hairs (?).

Heck of a find Steve. I am so glad it ended up with Garrett and I got to see it in person. This might be the new top of my list for hats I wished I own. When I saw you post it I was so pumped I sent Garrett a message in hopes he could score it. Just an Awesome hat!
