I think the combination of the invention of air conditioning and the sun helmet's association with colonialism caused it to fade out of common use sometime in the mid 20th century. I'm glad to see that there are a few of us trying to keep it from becoming completely extinct like the tricornered hat. Here in south Texas, I've tried a number of various hot weather headwear and, honestly, I haven't found anything else that works as well as a properly fitting pith helmet.
Honestly, I've tried mesh ball caps, do rags (wet and dry), cowboy hats, straw hats, boonie hats (wet and dry), even just a wet towel on my head. The pith helmet is king of sun hats, IMO.
Today, I was doing some heavy yard work (digging up bushes with a machete and a spade). It was humid and around 100°. Wet my head with the garden hose, put the pith on, and felt comfortable. I was able to work for a couple of hours straight. I felt so comfortable that at one point I stopped and took the helmet off to see if it was really doing much. I'm not exaggerating to say that the sun heated my head to being uncomfortable in less than one minute. Honestly, it was just a few seconds maybe 30 or so. Even after all my past ranting about the efficacy of the pith helmet, I was actually surprised at how much of a difference it had made. I know I sound like a broken record about these hats. People will have to get past the stereotypes and historical associations if they're ever to make a comeback, but they really are ingenious and effective.

And nice, good looking, different and always a great conversation item.

Couldn't have written it better.

I do believe that due to Mexican culture being, historically, politically incorrect, people think of Pith helmets more as a nice item from a not so distant past that an item linked to colonialism.

I am with you about this hats being the best hats under heavy sun and high humidity, I have been surprised also with the Akubra Slouch hat, it's amazingly cool under the sun.

Just got home with the Slats Gill Playboy Clone. I couldn't be more pleased. Light as a feather, unlined and finished to a baby bottom smoothness (both inside and out), sand color with Playboy type ribbon treatment. I took a couple of shots with a preliminary hollywood brim curl. Need to refine it for just the perfect Coach Gill panache! More later, I need a beer and a nap.

The weather is beautiful in the East Bay with temperatures in the low 70s. I had to just had to break out the Montecristi Super Fino from the Optimo Hat Company for today's revels. Sorry for the lack of focus on the image of the sweat band but the stamping itself is the problem.

Mushrooming was nice, but not very productive. A handful of chanterelles was about it for edibles. After a quick change I ran a few errands on the bicycle, accompanied by this boater,

Didn't take the photos until I got home so I was well sweated.

That's the hat!! I remember when you wore this a week or so ago and you and this hat were actually my motivation to try it. Its on my black Temple I got from Goodwill and I really don't find myself wearing it much. I thought if I could do something similar to yours Bob it would get more use.
I think you'll enjoy the changes if you do it. It's like getting a new hat.
