Took Mrs. Red to the Oregon coast today for some wave therapy. I started out in the Portis New Slant, but as the wind picked up, I followed Moe's example with a aerodynamic Christy's Bowler. It actually works, I didn't have to hold my hat on my head while photographing crashing waves. Couldn't concentrate on two things at once.

OK, because you asked, sit back and adjust your hats: the Frunobu-Mom Deathbed Story (TM). In four part harmony...with feelin'

So, yeah, Mom was on her deathbed - literally. She was in hospice, and had been there for an unusually extended period. She still had all her faculties, fortunately, but the emphysema and congestive heart failure were undeniable and we all knew it was coming soon. Don't take my lightheartedness the wrong way, we all had much time to prepare for the inevitable (including Mom) and we were pretty ready.

One day Hospice tells us, "It's time." She was deteriorating and it was starting to happen. She was still in and out of consciousness, but her 77 year-old body was failing. We made the appropriate calls to friends and family, and went to sit with her. After a time, a good portion of family was at Hospice to see her off - Mom was well-loved by everybody. Of course, you get a few of my kin around for any length of time, you've got a party. So we're all sitting around, telling bad jokes and my wife decides she's hungry. So off to WC for a couple sacks of Sliders.

When she returns, Mom has rallied a bit and is fairly conscious, and of course she wants a Slider! My sister starts feeding her one, she gets irritated and says, "Can I just hold the damn thing myself?" Shortly after that, she slipped back into unconsciousness and remained that way. Well, we sat up all night with her, awaiting the inevitable. About 7AM, my sister is sitting next to the bed, my mom is laying there with her head turned to the side. She opens her eyes, looks at my sister, and say, clear as a bell, "Do you think I could get a cup of coffee?"

Mom lasted a couple more weeks after that before she passed. Behold the power of White Castle!

Oh, and I'm wearing a Stetson 3X today, BTW...

Also, because SUNSHINE! And because I miss Matt.

I have only had WC a couple of times in my life (we don't have them here in Oregon) and this story only reinforces the crazy loyalty folks in the east have for the brand. She probably grew up eating them, and the memories kept her going for a while longer. Thank you for sharing Jim. It is a great story and legacy.

1963 (based on sales receipt) Borsalino. Stingy brim at 2". This is the closest on my screen to capture the deep moss colour with flecks of blue and black ribbon. It seems to prefer a centre dent.

Keep forgetting to post on Borsalino Brotherhood.

Happy Monday. Hope it is not as autumnal feeling where you are as it is in London...
