Moon, in thinking about what yr further I think it was probably 1958. We were a large extended family & were together a lot. We all lived within a few miles of each other. Birthday presents were not a common thing but my grandpa would have turned 60 yrs Old in 1958. That may have been the reason for such a special gift.

Thanks for the info on it possibly being an Adventure. I'll look into that. Maybe have to get the specs & have a custom made.
its's wonderful to have those memories Jack

in the pic the hat looks to have the paper from the box insert wrapped around the crown so we cannot see the ribbon ... do you remember if it had a contrasting ribbon or ...?

The ribbon didn't contrast much, it was very close. It was just a bit lighter looking in color due to the sheen it had. I can't remember if there was any binding or brim treatment.

I’m actually unsure... it is definitely 40s or slightly earlier

I was thinking possibly mid to late 30s but I know the clipper ship logo went into the 40s

Maybe when it is in hand there will be more clues

I wish they had kept this clipper logo. I'll be interested to see what you find when the hat arrives.

that's big tall crown for '58 ... must have been a very special piece

do you have memories of him wearing it much ?

was it an everyday wearer ?
I do remember him wearing it some. He had a couple of Western hats that he wore working all the time. I don't know whatever happened to the Lee. That's one of the things I plan to see if my aunts will know. I have only found one other pic of him in a fedora & I believe it dates to during the depression.

I've told the story about my grandma doctoring me when I tore open my leg jumping off a roof one time. She was giving me hell about being so careless & what I had done. My grandpa was standing nearby watching her doctor me. In an effort to get her to calm down & come to my defense he told her that testosterone can cause a lot of injuries to a young boy. I'll never forget that! He was wearing a Western hat then.

The contrast in the photo suggests it had a brim binding. That would be consistent with photos of Adventurers I've seen online, though their brim bindings were color matched to the felt and provided little contrast.

Yes, I recall that day. I can't quite pin down the yr or my grandpa's age but it was his birthday (March) & my aunts & uncles gave him the hat as a present. It was a medium gray in color. Probably 1954-1955 or so. I have 2 aunts still living that might remember but I haven't seen either of them since I discovered this pic. I even watch for a Lee box like that one.

He wore either a 6-7/8 or 7, so I could never wear it.

Jack; Your Grandfather and I would have gotten along very well.
