men who write in or keep journals

I have been a journal writer or possibly more of a chronicle writer on and off most of my life. While certainly not blessed in my skill with numbers, words came naturally, and when combined with a love of things past and a sense that no one was writing down the present I starrted off with...

    Old gas stations

I remember the classic Texaco station that was just a block over from my Grandparents house. It had been there since the 1930's I believe, certainly was there when my mother was growing up in the 40's. The same mechanic was still there to fix anything that moved in his one service bay with pit...

Youth is wasted on the young.

As frustrated as I get with modern youth, I work with many of those just past graduation, and even serve as educator for them from time to time, and have to say that as mentioned above in small groups of individually they seem more manageable than the generation between them and myself (the...

    What are you listening to?

Yes, Torme, Vaughn, Fitzgerald and Sinatra are the core of my vocal collection, though there is a wide range of others in there. Those four were where I started decades ago, and it has grown ever since. I was fortunate to have a good collection to start from but still working on it.

    Military 'woolly pully' sweaters

It is good to see this thread, as I have been wearing these sweaters shince my youth as well. I have worn them in multiple styles over the years, my fovourite and longest serving one being a British made dark blue in the traditional heavy cable knit, rough (what I term raw) wool. The knit on...

    Jury Duty Anyone

I have been called three times, the first time I passed selection and we made it about two thirds of the way through and a plea was reached, which when we reviewed it was thought to be a better result than we could have hoped to reach under the original charge to preserve the peace in future...

    Leather Belt Recommendations

After much frustration trying to find a nice plain sturdy belt, a friend of mine recomended this belt, from Goodrich and Gould. I have had it for over seven years and it is still looking like new. I have since also acquired the same belt in brown as well, and am very pleased with the product...

    WWII Songs

It is good to see "A Nightingale Sang In Barkely Square" included in this topic. In keeping with the London theme I would like to offer "London Pride" by Noel Coward. This song has always struck me as a great tribute to the stalwart determination of the City and all the other communities that...

What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

Currently watching Internes Can't Take Money, 1937, Joel McRae and Barbara Stanwyck, the very first appearance of the Dr. Kildare character. Not Academy material, however a good period piece. Last night was Mrs. Miniver.

Movies you're stunned that people haven't seen....

I am glad Twelve OClock High was mentioned above. Our local stations tended to play many classic films for mid day matinees asn even a few of our local theatres, including one private owned by a classic movie fan so I was fortunate to get to see many both on television and then select a few to...

How Did You Discover Old Time Radio?

My first experience with OTR was through several local radio stations that played radio drama and comedy at various times late at night in the mid 1970s. While my well intentioned parents would put me to sleep early, I have never slept much and would wake up to start my day around 0100h. I...
