funny thing is I saw a Schott in a army / navy store that I'm quite sure was a fake. That being said I don't think one would be for sale in the Schott factory.

I am certain that this is not a fake as this was sold at their factory store. Also nothing has been done to the jacket in terms of treatment..
Good news is that Schott has agreed to take the jacket back for a refund. He is happy with the response from Schott.
I understand that this jacket was sold as-is at the factory sale, but I wouldn't expect it to fall apart like it did so soon. A jacket like this should never be sold at any price..

Certainly not normal, I seen a few "lambskin" department store jackets do that. Some of these look to me like "Bonded Leather" sofas/charis, etc. That's why a "bonded" leather chair looks pitiful after just a couple of years, whereas a 100% leather chair just gets better and better with wear & break in. Sorry this happened to you, hope it can get resolved.

Here's a horsehide perfecta after a few thousand miles of bar hopping and turning wrenches. It happens from work and abrasion. Something scratched the hell out of your new jacket and that's probably why they got it on sale.

my friend owns two big army navy stores, they carry stuff like filson, swarovski and schott. They love Schott as its US made and they have a great past with the military, especially navy. Sure it was a fake?
but the zipper head looks legit, and the grain of the leather also look like full grain, probably previous owner tried to do weathering with something less normal, to me looks like paint remover, even a thin film layer of woodstain that is absorbed by the wood would bubble and peel off once I use paint remover over it.

Schott will take anything back for a refund if you are not happy about it. I'm glad they refunded your money. Not surprised they didn't exchange it for a pristine jacket that would have cost hundreds more. Hopefully it will end up on a bike or on stage somewhere.

That kind of flaking looks like PU leather.
I saw two 118's for sale that were VERY SUSPICIOUS looking. I'm going to back to the store next week for another look at them.
